What happens when students from different countries and disciplines come together to tackle real-world challenges?

From 5–8 May, students from across the EUTOPIA alliance gathered at the University of Gothenburg for the EUTOPIA Innovation Challenges for Students, working in international and interdisciplinary teams on sustainability challenges brought by local organisations and public authorities.

Four days of workshops, field visits, brainstorming and teamwork led to more than solutions. It also challenged the way students think, collaborate and approach complex problems.
🗣️ “It’s beautiful how all of these perspectives align in order to reach one specific goal.” — Diarra Sadji from Università Ca' Foscari Venezia
🗣️ “You have to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and approach the problem from a completely different standpoint.” — Benjamin DuBosq from Universitat Pompeu Fabra - Barcelona
🗣️ “We have access to so many universities and backgrounds. What we can come up with together is different from what we can develop while working in our own universities.” — Carina Ivu from Universitatea Babeş-Bolyai
🗣️ “Learning with each other will only prepare us more for the future problems we are going to face.” — João Mira from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa

For the students, sustainability meant looking beyond a single discipline or perspective and discovering what becomes possible when different experiences, ideas and ways of thinking come together.

☀️ Rethinking AI Through Different Perspectives in Portugal

Last month, the EUTOPIA Doctoral Summer School 2026 — promoted within the framework of NOVA Doctoral School — brought together 30 doctoral researchers in Lisbon for an interdisciplinary week exploring “Humanity for AI” and what it means to develop and use artificial intelligence in ways that keep people and society at the centre.

With participants from 12 nationalities, eight Universidade NOVA de Lisboa Schools and six universities, this year’s edition was more international than ever, welcoming researchers from both within and beyond the EUTOPIA Alliance.

The 2026 edition also included the participation of two resident professors from the EUTOPIA Alliance: Professor Karen Francois from VUB - Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and Professor Meritxell Joan-Rodríguez from Universitat Pompeu Fabra - Barcelona.

Through discussions, collaboration and different disciplinary perspectives, participants challenged assumptions and explored new ways of thinking about AI and its impact on contemporary research and society.

🎉 EUTOPIA members Ca’ Foscari and Warwick deepen bilateral ties

On 2 July, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia and the University of Warwick signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding at Ca’ Dolfin (Warwick’s venue in Venice), expanding a bilateral relationship first formalised in 2019 and nurtured within the alliance ever since.

The agreement covers dual degrees, doctoral co-supervision, staff and student mobility, and joint research under Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe. Building on their existing Dual Master’s in Economics, the two universities will explore joint programmes in Global Studies, Mediterranean Studies, Politics and International Relations, and Environmental Humanities. The British Council will fund two visiting professorships; the Conference of Italian University Rectors (CRUI) has granted its patronage.

The University of Gothenburg welcomed the EUTOPIA community earlier this week for the EUTOPIA Week 2026, bringing together university leaders, researchers, educators, professional staff, students and global partners for four days of collaboration and exchange.

Held under the theme “Finding Balance. Building Futures”, this year’s programme explored how universities can remain innovative, ambitious and globally connected while fostering the health and wellbeing of students, researchers and staff. The week was built around four key pillars:
👉 Meetings of EUTOPIA’s governing bodies, including the Student Council
👉 The fourth edition of the EUTOPIA Research Days
👉 The inaugural EUTOPIA College Education Forum
