Naturally Artists

Naturally Artists Naturally Artists is a project focused on teaching Art and English with a focus on the evironment. Children are already masters of observation.

Thoughts on the importance of observation as a respectful form of development. Observation is a natural capacity that enhances awareness and kindles a desire to learn. As adults, we sometimes overlook the value of the process of deep reflection as a learning tool for our children. It is common to feel that we need to entertain our children, or stimulate their potential through structured learning

and overtly adult-guided experiences. However, quite observation is vital to the process of becoming ourselves. It is important to allow children to spend time in deep absorption and reflection without distractions. We create an environment that allows children to interact within the space and with each other in their own natural way. Even though we value the importance of quiet observation, we, of course, vocally communicate often with each child throughout the day in times of confirmation of actions, explaining ways we may need to interact, explaining a process, setting limits, reading a book, singing songs together, communicating through a conflict, letting them know we see how much effort they put into a plate of “invisible” food, etc. We reinforce self-awareness by communicating with the children about what is going to be done, or is happening, while allowing plenty of time for them to respond. It is true that infancy is a time of dependency. Nevertheless, children should be allowed to do things for themselves. We provide a safe appropriate space for the infant to freely initiate their own movements and investigations. In moments of struggle, we pause to see if the child is capable of consoling themselves or solving their own problems or conflicts before we assist. Often in these moments, we vocally let the child know that we see that they are trying to discover a solution as we observe their needs. Giving children choices as often as possible gives them the autonomous comfort that they have some control of their lives. Through allowing them to make simple decisions, we help them to develop positive self-esteem. This prepares them to adapt to situations in which they don’t have the option of making a choice.

Today we made clover mandalas that we used to make rubbings for green fields. We colored and painted a blue sky. Then we cut colored Fall leaves and glued them on the ground or flying in the wind.

This week we are focused on Halloween and La Castanyada. We are making a house where the witch of Halloween and la castanyera live together.
This was an idea I had to honor the two holidays and give respect to la castanyera. I especially love the celebration of La Castenyada!

Tomorrow we will be making side profile portraits inspired by Dr. Seuss illustrations.
This book is especially funny to Catalan kids due to the meaning of the word “pet” in Catalan.
If you know, you know. 😂
