Happy to invite you to my 6-week CAE writing marathon. We start on the 10th of June, and in 6 weeks we will cover all 6 types of Cambridge Advanced writing.
Week 1 - essays
Week 2 - reports
Week 3 - proposals
One-week break to digest the information
Week 4 - reviews
Week 5 - formal letters
Week 6 - informal letters + revision
Every Monday, I will post a video with a detailed overview of the writing type of the week. In the video, I demonstrate and analyze both good and bad pieces, explaining what can be improved to receive a higher grade. Additionally, throughout the week, we will do small written tasks that will lead you to writing a very good piece.
At the end of the week, on Saturday at 11:00 Moscow time, we will meet on Zoom and discuss samples together. We will analyze them according to Cambridge assessment criteria and discuss how they can be improved (the meeting duration is 60-70 minutes, and it will be recorded). This way not only will you learn how to write but also how to assess writing. There will only be 5 meetings; we do not meet in the last week.
The marathon is only for C1 and higher, and it will be held on VK.
DM me of you are interested.

Do you know that sometimes only one glance at your work is enough to get the impression that you haven't organised your writing well?
If your body paragraphs aren't the same in size (roughly), and especially if they are smaller than your intro and conclusion, this usually means that you haven't developed the ideas in the paragraphs enough, or didn't give the ideas equal importance, or simply you don't know what is expected of you. And all this, in turn, will give the examiner the idea from the very first look that they will be reading one more "bad" piece of writing (which is, believe me, never an exciting prospect).
Even if your it turns out to be ok, and you managed to do great things there, this first impression really matters (we are all only human after all). And this may cast a shadow on your result. It's called "the halo effect".
Last year, I read about this phenomenon in a great book, Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman, and immediately thought of its implications in Writing and Speaking. The author was describing his grading process and how this effect influenced the marks he gave to his students. When the first work of a student was OK, he would be more lenient while assessing the next one, and vice versa. When the first one was bad, he was more harsh and gave more attention to the same mistakes without even realising it.
What does this mean for us?
Just make your body paragraphs look roughly the same in size! Don't tempt your fate and the halo effect :))

You know, I really love making up new things, and here´s a new Quizlet set for my Blinkist club students. I give this one for revision in a week: https://quizlet.com/674451549/
What do you think? I usually use such list to retell the books, but answering questions can also be fun! ☺️
And here, in the picture, you can see how all this looks in our meetings:
