The Catalan Question.
Today's elections in Catalonia are basically a referendum on the desire for it to split from Spain. I'm not convinced it will be the landslide the Catalan nationalists are predicting but if they win I hope Madrid allows them to actually vote on Independence.
Most of my friends here are Spanish Spanish and whenever the subject of Catalonian Independence comes up it is invariably followed by jibes ranging from light hearted to outright racist. This said, the same is true of people from Catalania I meet, though usually their comments are framed in complaints about injustices and tend to blame most of their problems on Madrid. None more so than their current economic difficulties, they have massive unemployment and a huge deficit, all of which they claim that if they were allowed to keep the billions Catalonia contributes to the state through tax revenue they would be much better off.
This latest drive for independence has been pushed mainly by the current ruling party(-ies) Artur Mas's CiU, a party which by all accounts had not overtly pro independence until they were forced into asking Madrid for an embarrassing and potentially politically damaging bail out. No doubt the fact that they are net contributors to the Spanish purse contributed to their financial woes but a large part can be pinned down to political management and corruption.
My personal view is that Catalans as a people with a distinct culture and language have every right to be Independent as do the Basques but to be led down this path during the worst recession in history by this political party will lead to a much poorer, financially at least, Catalonia.
The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".
In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy.
The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the second year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f".
This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.
In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where! more komplikated changes are possible.
Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.
Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.
By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".
During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensibl riten styl.
Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali k*m tru.
Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.
If zis mad you smil, pleas pas on to oza pepl.
