On 25 May, we marked 88 years since one of the darkest days in Alicante’s history: the bombing of the Central Market.

The air raid, one of the most devastating of the Spanish Civil War, left almost 300 people dead and more than a thousand wounded after nine Italian aircraft bombed the city centre.

May we never forget. 💐

Spain is one of those countries where you can be in snowy mountains, Roman ruins, desert landscapes, medieval villages and tropical-looking beaches all within the same country. The geographical diversity is honestly incredible😍🌿🌅

Can you add some more beautiful places to visit in Spain in the comments below?💖

🇪🇸 𝟭𝟬 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻...

Spain is much more than sunshine, tapas and beaches. Here are 10 fun facts that tell you a little more about our country, culture and history.

𝟭. 𝗪𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀
In Spain, most people traditionally have two surnames: one from the father and one from the mother. So, if Daniela García Ruíz has a child with Miguel Sánchez Tarí and they call him Antonio, his full name would usually be Antonio Sánchez García.

And no, women do not change their surname when they get married.

𝟮. 𝗔𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗰 𝗹𝗲𝗳𝘁 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵
Around 4,000 Spanish words are said to have Arabic roots. That’s because parts of the Iberian Peninsula were under Arabic influence for centuries during the period of Al-Andalus.

Words like 𝗼𝗷𝗮𝗹á, 𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘁𝗲 and 𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗮 all come from Arabic.

𝟯. 𝗪𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘆
In Spain, when children lose a tooth, it’s not the Tooth Fairy who comes... it’s 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗼 𝗣é𝗿𝗲𝘇, a little mouse.

The character became popular through children’s stories in the 19th century and is still one of the most loved figures from Spanish childhood culture.

𝟰. 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲
Although Spanish (Castellano) is spoken across the whole country, it’s not the only language.

Depending on the region, you’ll also find 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻/𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗻, 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗻, 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗲 and 𝗔𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗲.

That’s one of the reasons Spain is so linguistically rich. Do you know why our shared language is officially called Castellano? Comment below!

𝟱. 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮
A lot of people don’t know this, but Spain has two cities on the North African coast: 𝗖𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗮 and 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮.

Because both cities border Morocco, Spain is the only European country with a physical land border with Africa.

𝟲. 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀
The 𝗧𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘁, in Almería, is often described as mainland Europe’s only true desert.

Its dramatic landscape was used as the backdrop for lots of films, especially westerns in the 1960s and 1970s.

𝟳. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻
The 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀, in A Coruña, is the oldest lighthouse still in operation.

It dates back to Roman times and is still guiding ships today.

𝟴. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝘆𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀
Spain’s national anthem, 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹, is one of the few national anthems in the world with no official words.

So yes, people recognise the tune instantly but there’s nothing official to sing!

𝟵. 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗶𝗹 𝗴𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘁
Spain produces around 40–50% of the world’s olive oil, making it the biggest producer on the planet.

Olive oil isn’t just an ingredient here, it’s part of everyday life. Liquid gold.

𝟭𝟬. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗱
𝗦𝗼𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗱𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝘁í𝗻 opened in 1725 and is recognised as the oldest restaurant in continuous operation.

✨️ Are there are other fun facts you can add to the list?

Photos from Speechless in Spain's post 16/05/2026

The word 𝗡𝗜𝗖𝗘 doesn’t really exist in Spanish.

Well… not in the same way.

In English, “nice” does everything. But in Spanish, we’re usually more specific.

And honestly? That’s one of the reasons the language is so rich. ✨
