The Kata Behind the 100-Man Kumite
When people hear the name Masutatsu Oyama, they think of knockdowns, bull fights, and the legendary 100-man kumite. But few talk about the quiet foundation behind that power — Tensho kata.
Tensho did not come from sport fighting. Its roots trace back to Okinawan Naha-te traditions, influenced by southern Chinese boxing. Through masters like Chojun Miyagi, breathing methods, circular hand motions, and internal tension training were preserved. Oyama absorbed these principles and carried them into the creation of Kyokushin.
While Kyokushin became famous for full-contact realism, Oyama never removed kata like Tensho. Why? Because he understood something many forget:
Power without breath control collapses.
Strength without structure fades.
Aggression without discipline destroys the fighter.
Tensho develops ibuki breathing, rooted stance, wrist conditioning, and controlled tension — the exact attributes that allowed Oyama to endure extreme combat challenges. The iron body was built on soft, circular foundations.
History shows us something powerful here:
The strongest knockdown karate in the world was not built on sparring alone — it was built on kata.
That is the side of Oyama many never see.

Willie Williams stood 6’7”, weighed 230 pounds, and moved with the kind of presence that made crowds go silent.
Born in 1951, he became one of the most dominant non-Japanese fighters in the history of Kyokushin karate — during its most brutal era.
In 1975, at the 1st World Open, made a thunderous debut that put the world on notice. In 1979, he made history — 3rd place at the 2nd World Open, the first non-Japanese competitor ever to stand that high on the podium.By 1984, he was still competing at the elite level in a style known for breaking bodies and careers.
They called that period the Golden Era. And Willie was one of its giants.
Then came the moment that turned him into a legend.
A filmed encounter with a 750-pound grizzly bear for the documentary The Strongest Karate 2. Debated. Controversial. But unforgettable. From that day forward, he carried the nickname “The Bear Killer” — and became a cult icon in Japan.
But his most important fight may have happened in February 1980.
He faced Japanese wrestling legend Antonio Inoki in a “World Martial Arts Heavyweight Championship.” The fight was brutal. It ended in a draw after both men crashed out of the ring — Inoki with a broken rib, Williams with a broken elbow.
Some call it staged. Others call it the birth of something new.
Today, many analysts look back at that match as a precursor to modern MMA — and it was later voted the top professional fighting match in 20th-century Japan.
In the 1990s, Williams competed in RINGS, blending real and choreographed fights, finishing 9-4. Eventually, he returned home to North Carolina and taught for decades.
His philosophy was simple:
Basics before ego.Discipline before recognition.
He passed away in 2019 at 68 years old.
Not just a fighter.A bridge between eras.A reminder that true strength isn’t noise — it’s foundation.
Legends aren’t built on hype. They’re built on years of work no one sees. https://www.texaskyokushin.com
