Over the past few weeks, our pupil Ines B, had the incredible opportunity to complete an observership at Hospital Universitario La Paz, with our old runnymedian Dr. Estefania Linares Espinós.

As a Year 12 student aiming to Med School applications around the corner, we recommend these outstanding students to use summer holidays to gain a better understanding of what a career in medicine entails and to decide whether pursuing it is the right path for them. For this reason, this observership has been an incredibly valuable experience for Ines.

During her time at La Paz, she spent time in clinics, hospital rounds, and operating room. She followed Dra. Linares as well as residents in urology during July. Most excitingly, she had the opportunity to watch various fascinating surgeries, the most memorable being a radical cystectomy with a neobladder reconstruction.

What she most enjoyed about the experience has been learning about medicine in a practical setting. She found it especially interesting to see the biology she learnt at school applied to real patients and forming the basis for understanding the diseases she encountered. She also came to appreciate the importance of communication and trust in the doctor-patient relationship. Becoming familiar with the hospital environment and seeing how doctors interact with patients has given her a much more realistic understanding of what a career in medicine involves.

This opportunity has taught her an extraordinary amount and given her an insight into the medical profession. It has been a truly inspiring experience, and has strengthened both her passion for medicine and her confidence in pursuing it as a career. Our old runnymedians are our best example on what to persue, we thank Dr. Estefania Linares for her time sharing passion for medicine.

Runnymede College Summer Fair 2026

What an unforgettable day of fun, community and celebration!

From thrilling water slides and attractions to colourful face painting, exciting tombola prizes and traditional funfair games, there was something for everyone to enjoy. Families came together to cheer on the competitors in the fiercely contested Parents’ Football Tournament for the Headmaster’s Cup, while visitors enjoyed a fantastic selection of food and drink stalls throughout the day.

The atmosphere was made even more special by the incredible performances from our talented pupil bands and musicians, who provided live music across the fair. And, of course, the highlight of the day was an unforgettable concert by Maldita Nerea, bringing the entire community together for a spectacular finale.

A huge thank you to all our staff, volunteers and organisers whose hard work made this event possible. A very special mention goes to Mrs Powell for helping make yet another Summer Fair such a tremendous success.

Most importantly, every ticket, game, raffle entry and donation helped support a wonderful cause through

Thank you to our pupils, parents, staff, alumni and friends for your generosity and for making this year’s Summer Fair such a memorable celebration.

Our annual Prize Giving is always a special occasion, bringing together pupils, parents and staff to celebrate achievement and reflect on the values that define our school.

In his address, the Headmaster reminded us that excellence remains at the heart of everything we do. Academic excellence opens doors and creates opportunities, but it is built on the qualities we seek to nurture in every pupil: determination, discipline, hard work and a commitment to fulfilling one's potential.

Equally powerful was his reflection on the importance of family. As a family-owned school for almost six decades, Runnymede has been shaped by continuity, trust, personal commitment and a deep sense of responsibility to generations of families. He reminded us that the true strength of a school lies not in buildings, but in its teachers, pupils, families, values and standards.

The Headmaster also spoke passionately about intellectual freedom, encouraging young people to think independently, challenge assumptions respectfully, engage with differing viewpoints and leave Runnymede educated rather than indoctrinated.

We were honoured to welcome Dr Charles Powell as our guest speaker. Drawing on his expertise as a historian and international affairs specialist, he reflected on the enduring importance of the values enshrined in the American Declaration of Independence—liberty, equality, individual rights and democratic accountability—and their relevance in today's world.

He explored the changing international landscape, highlighting the growing importance of cooperation among nations in an increasingly multipolar world, and offered thoughtful insights on the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence. Referencing Pope Leo's reflections in his encyclical letter Magnifica Humanitas, he emphasised that technological progress must always be accompanied by moral responsibility and a commitment to the common good. His message was clear: while AI represents a remarkable human achievement, it must remain a tool that serves humanity, guided by ethics, responsibility and respect for human dignity.

The day was also an opportunity to celebrate another exceptional year of university destinations, with Runnymedians securing places at some of the world's leading institutions, including Oxford, Stanford, Yale, Columbia, Imperial, LSE, UCL and St Andrews.

Congratulations to all prize winners and to every pupil whose hard work, character and commitment have contributed to another outstanding year. Thank you to our parents, staff and wider community for the support that makes these achievements possible.
