Ihre Aufgaben
Zu den Dienstaufgaben gehören ausschließlich wissenschaftliche Dienstleistungen in der Lehre, die selbstständig oder unter der Verantwortung einer bzw. eines Hochschullehrenden zu erfüllen sind. Die Lehrverpflichtung bemisst sich nach der Lehrverpflichtungsverordnung für die Hamburger Hochschulen (LVVO) in ihrer jeweils geltenden Fassung. Das Dekanat kann die Lehrverpflichtung auf dieser Grundlage neu festlegen. Die Lehrverpflichtung beträgt gegenwärtig 12 Lehrveranstaltungsstunden im Semester.

Lehre im Fach Assyriologie in den Bachelor und Masterstudiengängen der Abteilung Geschichte und Kulturen des Vorderen Orients mit Schwerpunkt Assyriologie, beispielsweise:

Durchführung von Lehrveranstaltungen
Vorbereitung und Zusammenstellung von Unterrichtsmaterial
Literaturauswahl und -auswertung zur Vorbereitung der Lehrveranstaltungen Beratung und Betreuung von Studierenden bei Referaten und Hausarbeiten in den eigenen Lehrveranstaltungen Konzeption von Klausuren in den eigenen Lehrveranstaltungen Korrektur von Klausuren in den eigenen Lehrveranstaltungen

Ihr Profil

Abschluss eines den Aufgaben entsprechenden Hochschulstudiums. Hochschulabschluss in der Assyriologie bzw. Altorientalistik oder einem entsprechenden Fach mit Note 2 oder besser. Pädagogische Eignung und nachgewiesene Lehrerfahrung in der Assyriologie, inklusive Unterricht in Sprachen und historischen bzw. kulturhistorischen Seminaren. Erfahrung im Umgang mit Originalmanuskripten ist erwünscht.

The School of Philosophical, Historical and Indigenous Studies is seeking either a Level B Lecturer or Level C Senior Lecturer to join the Archaeology and Ancient History team. The role involves contributing to teaching across undergraduate and Honours programs in Archaeology and Ancient History, supervising graduate research students, and working collaboratively within team-teaching and interdisciplinary initiatives. The successful candidate will also support curriculum development, student
engagement, and the department’s public outreach activities.

The position will play an important role in maintaining and further developing the School’s strengths in interregional approaches to Egypt and its connections with the wider Mediterranean, including across archaeology, ancient history, and cultural heritage studies. At Level C, the role also carries a broader expectation of significant contributions to teaching leadership,
scholarship, and/or research, with an emphasis on academic development, curriculum enhancement, and active participation in the intellectual life and strategic priorities of the department.

As the successful candidate, you will have demonstrated experience in Egyptology, archaeology or ancient history (from the Predynastic to Ptolemaic periods), supported by a relevant qualification. You will bring a strong and active research profile in Egyptological, archaeological, ancient historical, and/or cultural
heritage research, evidenced by high-quality refereed publications, and a commitment to advancing scholarship through ongoing research activity, curriculum development, and academic leadership.

You will also demonstrate experience in tertiary teaching, including curriculum and subject development, course coordination, and the ability to motivate and engage diverse student cohorts across undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will have the capacity to work collaboratively and collegially within academic teams and with external partners, with a demonstrated record of postgraduate supervision, research leadership, and securing external research funding, contributing to research projects, and actively participating in the broader academic and service environment.

About the role

About You

The Orient Department of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) invites applications for the position of Deputy Director (full-time; civil-service grade A15 or, where applicable, salary scale up to E15 TVöD). The position is based in Berlin and is available at the earliest possible date.

The Orient Department conducts interdisciplinary archaeological research across Southwest Asia, from the beginnings of cultural development to the present. The position offers the opportunity to pursue research in an excellent scholarly environment with research foci in the Levant, Mesopotamia, and the Arabian Peninsula, and to develop innovative cross-border research approaches. The successful candidate will shape an independent research profile, contribute to strengthening cooperation between the DAI and partner institutions in research and cultural heritage preservation, and deputise for the Director in the academic, strategic, and organisational leadership of the department.

Applicants should hold a PhD in Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology or, in the case of a related discipline, demonstrate a substantial research focus in Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology through their doctoral work and publications. They should have an excellent record of independent, methodologically diverse archaeological field research in one of the department’s core regions, evidenced by relevant publications. Candidates must also demonstrate experience in leading complex research projects, collaborative research networks, academic teams, or research institutions, including staff management, administration, and the supervision of early-career researchers. Excellent written and spoken German and English are required; knowledge of Arabic is an asset.

This person will work closely with the staff team to deliver an exciting and innovative programme of events as well as manage its communications and relationships with supporters and interested audiences.

Part-time (0.5 FTE), fixed-term for 12 months

Reporting to Dr Hana Navratilova, the Principal Investigator,
the post holder will be a member of the Graffiti Gazetteer
research project. This project, now in its second phase,
is focussed on scaling up a digital research infrastructure
that serves as a data repository for secondary epigraphy
(graffiti) in Egypt. This phase of the project is supported
by funding from the John Fell Fund, building on funding
from Digital Scholarship .

The post holder will be responsible for carrying out research,
data harvesting, and grant scoping for the next phase. They
will lead data ingest, with a focus on data quality assurance,
ensuring adherence to project data standards. They will work
closely with the project’s software development specialist.

The successful candidate will hold or be close to obtaining
a doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline (ideally
Egyptology, Archaeology or Classics). Equipped with knowledge
or practical experience of agentic AI or AI-assisted workflows,
they will have experience of Digital Humanities research and
of working with geospatial data and ArcGIS, as well as with
inscriptional or related archaeological datasets. They will
bring experience of research data management and of
contributing to grant development, funding applications or
research proposal writing.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the
ability to work both independently and collaboratively as
the situation requires, are essential.

This position is based in central Oxford. This is a part-time,
fixed-term position for 12 months, to start from 1st November
2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
