Yesterday, our Study Abroad in Spain students visited the Museo Reina Sofía, where they stood before Picasso's Guernica—a painting that returned to Spain in 1981 after decades abroad and remains one of the world's most powerful anti-war artworks!

Surrounded by works from some of Spain's most influential modern artists, our Frankliners discovered how art can deepen their understanding of the country's history, culture, and identity.

"I had an absolutely incredible and unforgettable experience in Alcalá de Henares. It is a place steeped in history, yet it is also a city—resulting in a blend of modernity within this beautiful setting. The program offered by Instituto Franklin- UAH at the Universidad de Alcalá is exceptionally well-structured.

I took the following courses: The Great Masters of Spanish Painting and Spanish Traditions – Oral Communication. I had phenomenal professors who taught with enthusiasm and deep insight drawn from their respective fields of study. Consequently, when I visited the Museo Nacional del Prado—my first time in an art setting without prior formal art training—I understood the historical context, the artistic movements, the painters, the influences, and the techniques. I was able to navigate through the centuries and the motivations behind the art, rather than simply saying, "Wow, nice painting."

In contrast, in my traditions class, I learned the reasons behind the holidays celebrated in the various autonomous communities. I learned about the culture into which I was immersing myself. Finally, this month of June gave me the confidence that I can speak Spanish. I have studied the language since seventh grade, yet throughout those seven years, I never truly felt my skills were adequate. This experience changed that perspective. For other students who lack self-confidence, I know this experience will erase any doubts."

Today, Instituto Franklin- UAH joins the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the United States.

As we commemorate this historic milestone, we also celebrate the enduring ties between the United States and Spain, built through education, cultural exchange, and academic collaboration.

Every year, our Academic Programs bring together students, faculty, and institutions from both sides of the Atlantic, creating opportunities to learn from one another, broaden perspectives, and build lasting connections.

250 years later, education continues to be one of the strongest bridges between our countries!

One more step into — the second half of the summer experience begins!

After arriving yesterday, our Study Abroad in Spain students are now fully starting their program.

Today, they take part in orientation sessions and begin exploring both the Universidad de Alcalá campus and the historic city of Alcalá, marking a new stage in their academic and cultural immersion in Spain.

From campus life to discovering the city, the experience continues to build through learning, connection, and intercultural exchange.
