Sometimes, mapmakers are asked to create many layouts for a single dataset represented by different views of the map. While you could create an individual layout for each view of the map, you can also create a map series. A map series in ArcGIS Pro enables you to apply one layout, with map frames and dynamic elements that update automatically.

Three types of map series in ArcGIS Pro are the spatial map series, bookmark map series, and thematic map series. Each map series type has unique characteristics that make it the right choice for certain scenarios.

Spatial map series
A spatial map series uses an index layer of the map to determine the scale and content of each page within the map series. This index layer can either be a layer of your choice from the data within the map, or it can be a layer that you create using a geoprocessing tool specifically to be the index layer. Index layers created through geoprocessing tools can be either grids or strips. A grid index layer will overlap the entire study area and divide the study areas into smaller areas that define each map series page. A strip index layer will follow a linear feature, like a road or a river, and create small areas along that feature that define the area for each map series page.

Bookmark map series
A bookmark map series uses predefined bookmarks to determine the scale and content of each page within the map series. This series type enables you to have a fine level of control for each page within the map series. However, creating this map series can require manual work. A bookmark map series supports a filtered view of time through the time slider, as well as other numerical values, such as building floors, through the range slider.

Thematic map series
A thematic map series uses a radio group layer to determine the layers that will display on each page within the map series.

Each group layer or layer in the radio group layer will display on a different page in the map series.
Any layer that is not in the radio group layer will display on all pages in the map series.
