Types of pressure valves & their uses:
Pressure valves are designed to control, limit, reduce, sustain, or release pressure in fluid systems. They are essential for protecting pipelines, pumps, compressors, hydraulic equipment, process vessels, and other components from excessive or unstable pressure.
Different pressure valves perform different functions depending on the required set pressure, flow capacity, response time, and operating conditions. Here are 12 commonly encountered types:
1. Pressure relief valve
Uses: Opens automatically when system pressure exceeds a preset value and releases excess pressure to protect equipment and piping.
🔧 Engineering point: Commonly used for overpressure protection in liquid and process systems.
2. Pressure reducing valve
Uses: Automatically reduces a higher inlet pressure to a controlled, lower downstream pressure.
⚙️ Engineering point: Helps maintain stable downstream pressure even when inlet pressure changes.
3. Back pressure valve
Uses: Maintains a predetermined upstream pressure by opening when pressure rises above its set point.
🔩 Engineering point: Frequently used where a minimum pressure must be maintained in a process line.
4. Pressure sustaining valve
Uses: Maintains minimum upstream pressure by regulating downstream flow.
💧 Engineering point: Useful for protecting upstream equipment and maintaining pressure in distribution systems.
5. Differential pressure valve
Uses: Controls flow or pressure based on the pressure difference between two points in a system.
📐 Engineering point: Often applied where a constant differential pressure is required across equipment or circuits.
6. Pressure control valve
Uses: Automatically regulates process pressure according to a specified control signal or set point.
🎛️ Engineering point: Common in automated process-control systems where precise pressure regulation is required.
7. Pressure sequence valve
Uses: Allows a secondary hydraulic or pneumatic operation to begin only after a predetermined pressure is reached.
🔄 Engineering point: Useful for controlling the sequence of multiple operations in hydraulic systems.
8. Pressure limiting valve
Uses: Prevents system pressure from exceeding a defined maximum operating limit.
🛡️ Engineering point: Helps protect components from pressure overload and mechanical damage.
9. Pressure unloader valve
Uses: Diverts or unloads pump flow when a predetermined pressure is reached, reducing the load on the pump.
⚙️ Engineering point: Particularly useful in reciprocating and positive-displacement pumping systems.
10. Safety valve
Uses: Rapidly releases pressure when a protected system reaches an unsafe pressure level.
🚨 Engineering point: Widely associated with pressure vessels, boilers, steam systems, and other high-pressure applications.
11. Vacuum relief valve
Uses: Admits air or another suitable gas when internal pressure falls below the allowable vacuum level.
🌀 Engineering point: Helps prevent tank or vessel collapse caused by excessive negative pressure.
12. Pilot-operated pressure relief valve
Uses: Uses a pilot control mechanism to operate the main relief valve and provide accurate pressure control.
🎯 Engineering point: Suitable for large-flow systems and applications requiring precise pressure regulation.
