Designed by Studio Gang, Populus is redefining hospitality architecture in the heart of Denver. Inspired by Colorado’s iconic Aspen trees (Populus Tremuloides), the hotel transforms natural growth patterns into a bold, sculptural façade that instantly stands out as a new urban landmark.
🏨 Rising 13 stories with 265 rooms, Populus opens itself to the city on all three sides—connecting Denver’s civic, arts, and commercial districts while offering breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains and the State Capitol.
🪟 Its signature eye-shaped windows echo the natural markings left on Aspen trunks as branches shed over time. Each opening is carefully scaled—towering portals at street level enhance pedestrian life, while upper-level windows become inhabitable seats that pull nature into the guest experience.
♻️ Sustainability is not an add-on—it’s the core.
• First carbon-positive hotel in the U.S.
• No on-site parking, encouraging greener mobility
• GFRC façade with fly ash to reduce carbon footprint
• Green roof supporting urban biodiversity
• Targeting LEED Gold certification
🏆 Recognized globally, TIME named Populus one of the World’s Greatest Places, while Esquire crowned it Hotel of the Year, calling it “one of the most visually arresting buildings in America.”
✨ Populus proves that bold architecture, technical precision, and environmental responsibility can coexist—shaping the future of sustainable urban design.

These prominent steel structures alone may appear complex, but the points of intersection between the various systems lie beneath the artificial mound that conceals the concrete podium’s existence. Several galleries alongside five hanging 2,000 m² gallery pods encircle the main lobby area in celebration of Sheikh Zayed and the UAE.
Aesthetically, the aim was to combine contemporary architecture with the curves and swirls of traditional Arabic design. We enlisted our complex geometry team to aid the design of the free-form wings in particular, manipulating the form using a range of parameters to produce an optimised structure, which maximised its aerodynamic stability and pinpointed areas of weakness. Fabricated steel sections were placed vertically to shape the frames, connected to the circular hollow sections which formed the curved arches.
In a practical sense, all elements of the building were centred on the need to efficiently provide daylight and cooling in a harsh, arid environment. The wings each serve a separate gallery pod below, but there is no direct connection, allowing a free zone around the circumference through which light can pass. The arches and columns of the podium are carefully moulded to direct the sunlight, providing areas of shade and illumination.

One River North introduces a striking new vision for urban living, seamlessly weaving nature into the core of Denver’s River North Art District. 🌿🏙️
A sculpted canyon slices through the 16-story glass façade, creating a vertical landscape inspired by Colorado’s foothills and dramatic canyon formations. 🏞️✨
Extending from the sixth to the ninth floor, the canyon trail offers 13,000+ sq ft of lush terraces, water features, and communal spaces designed to promote relaxation, connection, and well-being. 💧🌱
This organic intervention softens the building’s geometric form, blending indoor and outdoor experiences as the landscape shifts with the seasons. 🍂🌸☀️❄️
The development includes 187 rental residences and 9,000 sq ft of ground-floor retail that integrates smoothly with the surrounding streetscape.
A panoramic rooftop terrace crowns the building, offering breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains and Denver skyline—complete with a pool, spa, and alpine-inspired garden. 🌄🏊♂️🌿
Fitwel-certified, One River North places wellness at the heart of its design, creating an urban sanctuary where nature, architecture, and community come together. 🧘♂️🏙️💚

A striking architectural façade where parametric brick design becomes more than an aesthetic statement.
This layered urban skin masterfully controls light, ventilation, and privacy, while creating a mesmerizing play of depth, rhythm, and shadows that changes throughout the day.
A perfect example of how computational design meets traditional materials, transforming brick into a dynamic architectural language.
