The discovery of a new crocodile species named Brochuchus parvidens, which lived in Kenya during the middle Miocene, adds to the fossil record. This species is characterized by small alveoli and the teeth appear to be more widely spaced, distinguishing them from other species previously discovered in the region. These findings contribute to understanding the evolutionary history of crocodiles in East Africa and illustrate how modern species replaced ancient lineages. It is likely that this biological turnover was driven by climate changes that transformed dense tropical rainforests into dry grasslands and savannas. Furthermore, these fossils underscore the importance of the fossil record in constraining the timeline of environmental and geological changes across the East African Rift System.
