Stop Correcting Answers ❌ Start Correcting Thinking ✅💡
For me, effective science leadership starts in the classroom by building students’ thinking before building their answers.
This is why I intentionally apply the in my lessons. 🧪✨
Identifying a student’s mistake is good, but empowering them to identify it themselves is transformative 🌱
I recently implemented this strategy with my Year 6 and Year 8 students to tackle common misconceptions in Gravity and Density.
The shift in engagement was incredible! 💫✨
🔍 What is Error Analysis?
Instead of providing "ready-made" facts, I presented students with deliberately flawed scientific statements and challenged them to:
1️⃣ Identify the specific scientific error.
2️⃣ Explain why the logic is flawed.
3️⃣ Correct it using precise scientific terminology.
💡 Key Takeaways from the Sessions:
• In Gravity: We debunked the “Gravity only exists on Earth” myth and corrected the common phrasing “Gravity pushes” to the scientifically accurate “Gravity pulls.”
• In Density: We fixed formula reversals (D = V \ M) and proved that density not weight, is the true determinant of whether an object floats or sinks.
🎯 Why it worked?
It shifted students from passive memorization to active detective work. This is one of the most effective ways to "uproot" deep-seated misconceptions before they become permanent.
🧩 How to implement this?
• Think–Pair–Share: To encourage individual reflection.
• Group Challenges: To foster collaborative peer-teaching.
• Exit Tickets: For quick, effective formative assessment.
