For several years, the Pyramid of Menkaure on the Giza plateau had been closed to the public. Recently, it’s open for visitors to enter, alternating with the Pyramid of Khafre. On this day, I entered the pyramid and filmed its interior, or rather, that part of its interior accessible to us.

On the north-east side of the Step Pyramid in Saqqara is Djoser’s Serdab, a small chamber with a statue of the deceased king looking out from two tiny holes onto the imperishable stars. These were two stars that were constantly visible in the night sky. It was believed that the king would join the imperishable stars that would guide him to reach the afterlife, becoming immortal.

Begun by Seti I, and completed by his son and successor, Ramses the Great, the Great Hypostyle Hall at Karnak is adorned with 134 massive sandstone columns, arranged in 16 rows. The 12 columns lining the central aisle are taller than the others, standing at a height of 69 ft (as shown in this video). Their capitals are reminiscent of the blossoming lotus, while the remaining 122 columns are in the shape of a papyrus, thus symbolising the union between Upper and Lower Egypt. In its heyday, the hall would have been brightly painted. In fact, some of its paint still exists on the upper portions of the columns. Walking down the Great Hypostyle Hall, we feel so minute, pretty much like Lilliputians, with the forest of columns towering above us.

The Mammisi, or as it is known in English, birth-house, was a common feature of Egyptian temples built during the Ptolemaic era. The Mammisi at Philae Temple is situated in the forecourt of the temple. The capitals of its columns depict the face of Hathor. What’s interesting about these faces is that Hathor’s facial expression differs from one column to the next (clearly captured in the video). Starting with the column on the far right, we see Hathor’s grimaced face, and moving to the left, the expression changes, until the columns on the far left show a smiling Hathor. These symbolise the pain of childbirth.

These two exquisite sunken reliefs of Horus and Nekhbet are found at Edfu. Horus is wearing the sun disc on his head. Nekhbet, the vulture that represents Upper Egypt, is wearing the Atef crown, combining the white Hedjet crown of Upper Egypt with an ostrich feather on each side. The intricate detail of these two deities is captured beautifully in this video.

This impressive black basalt statue is out of this world. Osiris is resting on his funerary bed, while Isis and Nephthys watch over him. In Ancient Egyptian mythology, Osiris was murdered by his brother Set, who wanted to usurp Osiris’s throne. Isis, helped by her sister Nephthys, recovered the broken pieces of his body, and restored him using magic. Taken at face value, the Osiris-Isis myth is a timeless tale of love. And it is. It transcends time and space as it symbolises an idea that has permeated humanity since time immemorial – love conquers all. However, its symbolism goes far deeper. It represents opposing, albeit complementary forces, such as, the struggle between good and evil, the power of life over death, order versus disorder, the yin and yang. The statue is now housed at GEM.

Tutankhamun’s restoration stela is now displayed at the Grand Egyptian Museum. This stela marks a definite break from Akhenaten’s Atenism, where Tutankhamun re-instates the old gods of Egypt and the Amun priesthood, and reopens all the temples.

THE MENKAURE PYRAMID CAUSEWAY
Today, not much is left of the Menkaure pyramid causeway since most of it is buried beneath sand. However, we can still trace its route, in some areas, down to the Valley temple below.
