1.

Birth of the institute
The Institute of African Research and Studies wasestablished in 1947. It was affiliated to the Facultyof Arts, Cairo University under the name of Centerfor Sudanese Studies, which consisted of two departments: Geography and History. It became an independent institute affiliated directly to Cairo University in 1950. The institute was again affiliated to the Faculty of Arts in

1954 until 1970 when it was decreed to be back an independent institute for African research and studies affiliated directly to Cairo University. In 1971, four new departments were added to Geography and History departments. They are:
Department of Political and Economic Systems, Department of Natural Resources, Department of Anthropology and Department of African Languages. In 2004, the institute study system was changed to credit hour system. The Department of Political and Economic Systems has become Department of Politics and Economics. The institute has about 90 faculty and assistant members. At present there are about 90 graduate students enrolled in various departments. Teaching and conducting researches.
2. Publishing papers and studies relevant to Africa.
3. Training technicians.
4. Organizing fieldworks.
