The DAAD Cairo Office is proudly announcing the call for applications for the 4th edition of the Falling Walls Lab Egypt.

Outstanding young academics, entrepreneurs and specialists from all disciplines will get the chance to share their groundbreaking idea by presenting it in three minutes on stage. The winner is qualified and awarded a ticket for the international Falling Walls Lab in Berlin and the annual Falling Walls Conference on 9 November 2017.

Applications must be submitted until June 8 by

- submitting the application form on http://www.falling-walls.com/lab/apply

- sending a short video of max. 3 minutes to [email protected]

The Falling Walls Lab Egypt takes place on 19th July 2017 at Sawy Culture Wheel in Zamalek, Cairo and is open to the public.

All members of the IT industry are welcome tomorrow Tuesday 19th July from 2:00 pm. Students will showcase their final year projects and will bring their CVs.

My talk at the "Towards Building Egyptian Knowledge and Innovation Society" conference was with the title: "Strategy for Innovation in Higher Education"

Summary of the talk:
• Innovation is not the same as R&D, innovation requires that the results of research are exploited in society.
• Innovating relies critically on multiple & dense connections and dialogue between individuals and disciplines.
• Deep understanding of the problem is critical.
• Multi-disciplinarity is vital to innovation.
• Our universities need to fundamentally change: currently our universities do not spawn enough innovations (relative to their resources), they need to be more open and to encourage true multi-disciplinarity.
• Creating “virtuous circles” for continuous innovations calls for proper connections to industry, including student industrial training and internships, and to society, leveraging resources such as Alumni and the huge number of students, staff and researchers available to attack real-world problems.

Many researchers don't realise that if they publish papers detailing their innovations, they no longer apply for patents to protect the same innovations! If your results are patentable, don't publish the details until after you filed your patent application!
