I used to watch trainers telling people that great speakers needed the perfect script. A tight opening line. Every transition mapped out. A playlist ready to hit play.
Then I started paying attention to how real DJs work a room.
A good DJ does not run through a fixed set list. He reads the energy in the room, feels the moment it shifts, and picks the next track on instinct, not because it was next in line, but because it is what the room needs right now.
That is exactly what separates a forgettable speaker from one people remember.
The playlist mindset feels safe. You know every word before you say it. But it also means you stop listening. You stop noticing that the room has already moved on from what you rehearsed.
The DJ mindset is different. It says: come prepared, but stay present. Know your material well enough that you can set it aside the second the room asks for something else.
I have spent 18+ years studying people and their behaviour, teaching leaders and speakers this exact shift, from performing a script to reading a room. It is the difference between talking at people and actually connecting with them.
Stop being the playlist. Be the DJ.
What is one moment you had to throw out the script and read the room instead? Tell me in the comments.
