This weekend, we welcomed Prof. Dr. Hani Sewilam, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, to our mangrove restoration site in Hamata, alongside our partners at HSBC, their volunteers, local community members, and representatives from the local Protectorate and Local Governance.

As we carried out our final round of plantation, the visit created a platform for dialogue between key stakeholders on the future of Hamata, its mangrove ecosystems, and the communities whose livelihoods are connected to them.

From planting alongside HSBC volunteers, to operating ecotourism boat tours and sharing knowledge from our mangrove honey beekeeping initiative, community members demonstrated the different ways restoration and sustainable livelihoods come together.

The visit highlighted the importance of bringing communities and institutions into conversations about the future of their ecosystems, ensuring that local knowledge, priorities, and opportunities are part of the process.

Restoration is not only about planting mangroves. It is about building the relationships, stewardship, and shared responsibility that sustain them.

Through ongoing research in Forward osmosis (FO), our team is exploring innovative approaches to wastewater treatment and water recovery.

FO uses a semi-permeable membrane and an osmotic driving force to facilitate water separation from wastewater.

Recovered water could potentially support applications such as agriculture irrigation and aquaculture, helping conserve freshwater and promote more sustainable water management.

In Hamata, our team is working hand in hand with the local community to prepare our mangrove plantation and restoration zones for a clean slate. Together, weโ€™re clearing waste, caring for the coastline, and creating healthier spaces for nature to thrive.

Our team is working on membrane fabrication as part of ongoing research in water treatment and desalination.

Developing efficient membrane technologies can contribute to improving water quality, promoting more sustainable water management, and addressing the growing challenge of water scarcity.

As we gear up for our final plantation, our Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) activities are also entering their final stage. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ”Ž

After six years of mangrove restoration, weโ€™ve learned that successful restoration is about much more than counting seedlings.

Hereโ€™s what we monitor on the ground:
๐ŸŒฑ Seedling health & survival โ€” Are seedlings growing and adapting?
๐Ÿ’ง Water conditions โ€” Is the hydrology supporting mangrove growth?
๐ŸŒฟ Soil health โ€” What are the conditions beneath the surface?
๐Ÿฆ€ Biodiversity โ€” Is the ecosystem becoming more alive and diverse?
๐Ÿ‘ฅ Community engagement โ€” Are local communities part of, and benefiting from, the restoration?
๐Ÿ“Š Environmental change โ€” What does the data tell us about the ecosystem over time?

And perhaps our biggest lesson: restoration doesnโ€™t end when the seedlings go into the ground.

It requires continuous monitoring, learning, adapting, and working with nature not against it.

Eligibility: AUC students, faculty, and staff and their families are welcome to register, especially the little ones!๐Ÿ˜‰
Plot: Each plot is 40mยฒ, perfect for 2-4 participants.
Expert Support: CARES personnel and technicians will be on-site during the planting season to guide you every step of the way.
Location: AUC New Cairo Campus, Beside AP1 gate behind the swimming pool.
Fees: 600 LE per plot (includes a refundable 100 LE deposit if you clean up after the harvest).
