Faculty and research experts from Ain Shams University (ASU, Egypt), Cairo University (CU, Egypt), University of Osnabrueck (UOS, Germany), and University of Muenster (MU, Germany) are forming a funded* research project that introduces, performs, and leads theoretical and experimental interdisciplinary research within the intersection between the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and cognitiv
e science: "JeSICS: The Joint Exploratory Society for Interdisciplinary and Cognitive Studies" (or J6 for short). The goal of the project is mainly threefold: (i) to form a research group specialized in theoretical and experimental cognitive science, (ii) to start a seeding project for the group which develops a cognitively inspired model, and (iii) to establish an equipped behavioral lab in Egypt for exploratory and interdisciplinary studies related to the group's work. The new collaboration project between Egyptian and German scientific institutions will, for the first time in Egypt and the middle-east, establish a scientific research group and build an equipped cognition lab in Egypt (at the Faculty of Science, Ain Shams University). The activities of the first-of-a-kind J6 society will be triggered through a seeding project on "Sketch Recognition", which develops an AI competence model for the recognition, classification, memorization and retrieval of "sketches". A kernel society (research group) will be formed, which would eventually be responsible for migrating the German experiment for embracing cognitive science studies into Egypt. The group aims to study, computationally model, and solve fundamental cognition problems, where methodologies from both natural and human sciences are employed. This is the first kernel society of its kind allover the Egyptian (and the Arabic) scientific community.
