FULLY funded Fellowship in AUC

In May 2011, Yousef Jameel, working with the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP), initiated the Yousef Jameel Public Leadership Program, with the overall objective of building the capacity of young competent Egyptian nationals in the areas of public policy and public administration, and preparing them for leadership roles in Egypt after the January 25 Revolution. By supporting 300 fe

llows in 12 cohorts of 25 Egyptian graduate students per year, the Yousef Jameel Public Leadership Program will have contributed to creating a cadre of well educated, competent graduates ready to take on the responsibility of affecting change in the Egyptian society. A selected number of exceptional candidates are to receive a complete fellowship to pursue a master's degree in one of the following six programs at AUC:

- Master of Public Policy (MPP)
- Master of Public Administration (MPA)
- Master of Global Affairs (MGA)
- Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication
- Master of Arts in International Human Rights Law
- Master of Law in International and Comparative Law (LLM)
- Master of Arts in Migration and Refugee Studies
- Master of Arts in Middle East Studies

🌍 Semester Abroad Spotlight

As part of the opportunities offered through the Yousef Jameel GAPP Fellowship, our fellows have the opportunity to gain international academic exposure through programs and learning experiences at leading institutions around the world.

Our fellow Mohamed Elleithy, a graduate student in the Master of Public Policy program at The School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at AUC, recently participated in a summer program on AI and Sustainability at IÉSEG School of Management in Paris.

The program introduced Mohamed to the foundations of machine learning and explored how data-driven AI models can be applied to complex global challenges, including energy poverty.

Reflecting on his experience, Mohamed shared:
"Gaining this foundational knowledge has completely opened up my perspective on how we can leverage data-driven AI models to tackle pressing global issues and find innovative ways to address and alleviate energy poverty."

🌍 Semester Abroad Spotlight
As part of the opportunities offered through the Yousef Jameel GAPP Fellowship, fellows have the opportunity to broaden their academic and professional horizons through semester exchange programs at leading universities around the world.

Our fellow Mohamed Shokri, an LL.M. student, spent a semester at University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, where he experienced one of the world's most distinguished academic environments and explored a unique approach to legal education.

Reflecting on his experience, Mohamed shared:
"One of the biggest takeaways from my time at Oxford was the learning experience itself. The lectures were excellent, but what truly stood out was the tutorial system. It created space for thoughtful discussions, challenged assumptions, and pushed us to think more critically rather than simply absorb information. It was an academic environment that constantly encouraged curiosity, dialogue, and deeper reflection."

He added:
"Beyond the classroom, Oxford was an experience in itself. Walking through its historic streets and visiting its colleges felt like stepping into centuries of academic tradition. Every college has its own character and story, making the city feel less like a university town and more like a living museum where history and scholarship exist side by side."

As part of the opportunities offered through the Yousef Jameel Fellowship, fellows have the opportunity to broaden their academic and cultural horizons through semester exchange programs at leading universities around the world.

Our fellow Rahma Khaled spent a semester at Sciences Po in Paris as part of her Master's in International Affairs, where she experienced a dynamic international learning environment and engaged with diverse perspectives from around the world.

Reflecting on her experience, Rahma shared:
"A semester abroad at Sciences Po Paris was more than an academic experience—it was a once-in-a-lifetime journey of growth and self-discovery."
She added: "Living and studying in an international environment gave me the opportunity to meet people from different cultures, embrace new perspectives, and see the world through a broader lens."

🎓 Congratulations to our fellow, Aseel Tajuddin, on successfully earning her Master of Public Administration from The American University in Cairo.

Thesis Title: “Creating Public Value Through Public-Private Partnerships in Technical and Vocational Education and Training in Egypt.”

Aseel's research examines how industry-driven Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) models and public-private partnerships can reshape public perceptions of technical education in Egypt. Using Elsewedy Technical Academy as a case study, the thesis explores how aligning education with labor market needs and creating public value can strengthen trust in TVET and position it as a pathway to economic opportunity and national development.

A valuable contribution to ongoing conversations on public sector reform, education policy, and workforce development. Warm congratulations to Aseel on this well-deserved achievement, and best wishes for continued success in the journey ahead.

📚YJ Book Club - Granada Trilogy!
We had a profound and unforgettable session as our community gathered to explore the iconic masterpiece "ثلاثية غرناطة" (Granada Trilogy) by the late author and scholar Dr. Radwa Ashour.

It was a deeply intimate space where personal experiences intersected with the narrative. Together, we reflected on identity, colonialism, and the Palestinian cause, delving into how imagination and dreaming serve as vital acts of resistance that keep human hope alive, even in the darkest of times.

The depth of the conversation was truly elevated by our honored guests:
* Bassim Khandakji, Renowned Palestinian novelist and winner of the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF / The Arabic Booker) 2024. He enriched our discussion with his profound insights on preserving national memory and the powerful parallels between the Moriscos' history and human resilience.
* Dr. Nada Hegazy, Lecturer of English Literature, acclaimed literary translator, and former PhD student of Dr. Radwa Ashour. She provided us with unique personal and academic perspectives on her mentor's intellectual legacy and the journey of translating Arabic literature to global audiences.

A heartfelt thank you to our inspiring guests and fellows for making this evening so rich, moving, and memorable.

🎓 Congratulations to our fellow, Zeina Shoukry, on successfully earning her Master of Arts in Migration and Refugee Studies from The American University in Cairo.

Thesis Title: “Eritrean Refugees Between Securitization and Survival Along the Sahara Route to Egypt.”

Zeina's research examines how Eritrean refugees fleeing mandatory and indefinite conscription navigate their journeys across the Sahara Desert from Sudan to Egypt amid increasing securitization and border controls. By shedding light on the often-overlooked experiences of refugees in transit, the thesis offers valuable insights into forced migration, refugee protection, and border governance.

A meaningful contribution to ongoing conversations on migration, displacement, and humanitarian policy. Warm congratulations to Zeina on this well-deserved achievement, and best wishes for continued success in the journey ahead.

As part of the opportunities offered through the Yousef Jameel Fellowship, fellows have the opportunity to broaden their academic and professional horizons through semester exchange programs at leading institutions around the world.

Our fellow Hassan Elmeligy, a graduate student in the International and Comparative Law program, spent a semester at the Geneva Graduate Institute in Switzerland. Throughout his exchange, Hassan pursued advanced studies in international law under the guidance of globally renowned scholars while gaining invaluable exposure to the heart of international governance.

Reflecting on his experience, Hassan shared:
"My semester at the Geneva Graduate Institute was truly transformative. Studying international law in International Geneva allowed me to learn from leading scholars and engage with experts shaping the future of global legal frameworks."

He added:
"Beyond the classroom, I had the invaluable opportunity to visit international organizations including the United Nations, WTO, WMO, ICRC, and UNHCR. Seeing how these institutions operate firsthand gave me a deeper understanding of how international law is implemented and how humanitarian action is carried out in practice."

We are thrilled to celebrate our fellow, Farah Boraay, who successfully completed her semester exchange at the Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) in Barcelona, Spain! 🇪🇸

During her time at IBEI, Farah immersed herself in a rigorous academic environment, deepening her expertise in global affairs and migration dynamics while collaborating with peers from around the world.
Reflecting on this milestone, Farah shared:
"This opportunity has been a truly defining milestone in my personal and professional journey. Immersing myself in such a rigorous academic environment alongside incredible peers has profoundly shaped my perspective on global affairs and migration dynamics."

🎬 A YJ Tradition Continues
As part of one of our favorite YJ traditions, our fellows came together for a special screening of "The Stories (القصص)" at Zawya Movie Theatre, followed by an engaging discussion with the film’s director, Aboubakr Shawky.

The evening offered more than just a film—it was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect, exchange updates, welcome new ideas, and discuss upcoming activities for our Fellowship community, all while sharing meaningful conversations inspired by cinema.

As part of the opportunities offered through the Yousef Jameel Fellowship, fellows can broaden their academic and cultural horizons through semester exchange programs at leading universities around the world.

Our fellow, Nada Elkamary, recently spent a semester at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco. There, she immersed herself in a vibrant academic environment while exploring new perspectives on the political economy of the Arab world and North Africa.

Reflecting on her experience, Nada shared:
"Studying abroad in Morocco showed me the importance of creating more opportunities for researchers across the region to study, travel, and collaborate with one another. These exchanges help foster more locally grounded knowledge production and build meaningful connections across African and Arab countries that share many common struggles and aspirations."

She added:
"This experience would not have been possible without the support of the Yousef Jameel Fellowship and the dedicated efforts of my AUC professors, who sparked my curiosity and deepened my understanding of both the challenges and richness of our region."
