Does Cupping Really Work
Being us Muslims – believing – answers this question. Of course, Prophetic Cupping works. As Muslims, we believe in that everything said by Prophet Mohamed – Peace of Allah be Upon Him – is from Allah as A Divine Revelation. Yes, it is not his own words except what he explained in particular situations.
So, if Mohamed - The Messenger of Allah – (PAUH) said:
It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said:
“Healing is in three things: A drink of honey, the glass of the cupper, and cauterizing with fire, but I forbid my nation to use cauterization.” And he attributed it to the Prophet
We believe as Muslims that it is definitely right and true. Plus, it is an indirect intimation from Allah
However, I can't force Non-Muslims to believe in my belief in a religiously way. But we have another language that every civilized nation can understand: The Science Language.
And by the language of science we will ask the same question and answer it: Does Cupping Really Work?
Cupping in History
Historically, cupping isn't an original Islamic art of medicine. It is just a kind of ancient medicine. Ancient Chinese, Egyptian and Assyrian knew cupping as a healing method. Arab took this art from their neighbors – Assyrian, I think – and used it for curing before Islam. After beginning the Prophethood of Mohamed, he endorsed cupping as a comprehensive treatment for a lot of diseases beside Honey and Cauterization. (Read the Hadith above)
This endorsement of Prophet for cupping made it more Islamic healing treatment.
After The Industrial Revolution, humanity tended to experimental science in each side of the new mechanical life, and of course the field of medicine. So, cupping met a tepidity period in this age. On the other side, people trusted more in the chemical drugs, and believed more in the clinical treatment.
But chemical drugs have many side effects. It cures a disease and brings another. Pharmaceutical companies produce and launch a medication and in a period which is less than 10 years they screaming "STOP, it is dangerous. Collect the damaged recipe from pharmacies and hospitals".
A practice like that, affect people negatively. They became worry about Chemical Medicine. But what is the alternative? Safe healing stayed as a persistent need. So, it was the new sunrise of The Complementary Medicine (Also, it called The Alternative Medicine) and cupping is one of the alternative medicines. Cupping in History

The Types of Cupping and How to Perform
Cupping got its name from cups. Cupper uses cups in cupping. Cupping refers to the suction process for particular parts of the skin. This process accumulates spoiled blood in a particular location on the skin for a while. Cupping is divided into two types:
- Wet Cupping: Cupper makes a light discission for the accumulated blood. Of course, this for extracting the spoiled blood.
- Dry Cupping: There is no discission in this type. It is preferable for diabetes patients.
What Modern Medicine Says about Cupping
As we mentioned above, modern medicine is a completely experimental medicine. It believes in measures, numbers, complex compositions and laboratory experiments. So, you will find them speak about cupping in little careful words.
In a discreet way, Dr. David Kiefer says: "There haven’t been many scientific studies on cupping. One report, published in 2015 in the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine, notes that it could help with acne, herpes zoster, and pain management."
"That’s similar to the findings from a 2012 report, published in PLoS One. Australian and Chinese researchers reviewed 135 studies on cupping. They concluded that cupping therapy may be effective when people also get other treatments, like acupuncture or medications, for various diseases and conditions, such as:
• Herpes zoster
• Acne
• Facial paralysis
• Cervical spondylosis
But those researchers noted many of the studies they reviewed could have been biased and that better studies are needed." He continued. (WebMD)
Also, Dr. Kiefer spoke about a joint research for Australian and Chinese researchers. They reviewed 135 studies about cupping and finally they concluded a result of "Cupping works well as a complementary treatment. So, it is preferable to use cupping beside medications or acupuncture".
Then, he finished his article with the announcement of The British Cupping Society that cupping heals a list of diseases like high blood pressure, skin problems, anxiety, depression, and much more. But society didn't include any scientific report about this claim.
Finally, Dr. Kiefer advised to use cupping after asking your Doctor.
This short report had been emphasized by a certified study by Dr. Sahbaa Mohamed (Faculty of Medicine – Azhar University – Egypt). In her study, Dr. Sahbaa asked the same question: Does Cupping Really Work?60 rheumatoid patients (25 – 60 ages) plus a group of 10 normal persons as a standard sample. It was in Hussien University Hospital – Azhar University. Study is full of useful information that was supported by many photos for the positive effect of cupping on healing rheumatoid.
Side Effects of Cupping
Till now, there is no a single side effect for cupping. Of course, there are some of acceptable side effects but it is completely safe. These side effects may be:
- Exhaustion
- Superficial wounds
- Skin infections
Conclusion: There are no dangerous side effects for Cupping, till now.
Conclusion of Cupping
According to studies above, cupping has a tangible effect for healing diseases in one condition: It works beside normal medications. This was about certified scientific studies.
The other side of cupping is about the human experiments that no one document. There is a penalty of stories about the healing effect of cupping in many diseases. But there is no scientific methodology in such cases to measure and record results.
Also, the giants of pharmaceutical companies ignore spending on complementary medicine. They want people to buy their medications. So, they treat alternative medicine in insulting way to convince people that medications is the only trusted and acceptable treatment.
Imagine if a company or organization decides to support the complementary medicine? It will be a big punch for these giants. They are ready for spending billions of dollars to avoid this step. Of course, there are other reasons but the main one is expenditure.
Again, this result is what I found about cupping in certified studies and researches. But as Muslims we believe in Prophetic Medicine as a healing method because all of Prophet Mohamed's sayings are revelations from Allah. (Sunnah)
