The Farouk El-Baz Sustainability Research Centre of Excellence (FESRC) at the The British University in Egypt (BUE) was delighted to host the SPARK Final Dissemination Workshop entitled โ€œSustainable Additive Manufacturing for a Greener Futureโ€ on Tuesday, 12 May 2026, at the BUE.

SPARK project is a collaborative project between the University of Birmingham, UK, and The British University in Egypt, supported by British Council.

The workshop highlighted SPARKโ€™s contribution to advancing sustainable additive manufacturing through education, research, and stronger academia-industry engagement. A key outcome of the project is the co-creation of a Joint MSc programme proposal entitled โ€œSustainable Industry Using Additive Manufacturing (AM)โ€, together with the development of a digital hub to connect researchers, students, and industrial partners in Egypt and the UK.

The event opened with remarks from distinguished speakers representing BUE and the University of Birmingham, including Prof. Mostafa Shazly, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdel Azim, Prof. Ahmed Elkaseer, and Prof. Khamis Essa, the project PI from the University of Birmingham.

The technical programme began with a presentation by Prof. Amany Micheal, who introduced the postgraduate MSc programmes offered by the Faculty of Engineering at BUE. This was followed by insightful talks from Dr. Dimitris Tzagkas from Ansys Synopsys Inc, Greece; Dr. Katja Nau from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany; Dr. Andrew Garrick from School of Engineering, University of Birmingham, UK; Dr. Lisa Saad from AI & Energy Innovation, Austria; and Dr. Tarek Mansour, who presented an industrial case study on localised FRP manufacturing in Egypt and its scaling to other sectors.

FESRC was also honoured by the participation of Major General Dr. Khaled Shokry Ghaith, Consultant of the AOI Chairman for Chemical Industries and Head of the Scientific Committee, together with Prof. Iman El-Mahallawi, Prof. Hussein Mohamed, Prof. Abdallah Shokry, and other distinguished colleagues, partners, and attendees from academia and industry.

The programme concluded with a roundtable discussion moderated by Prof. Mostafa Shazly on โ€œThe Future of Sustainable Manufacturingโ€, bringing together academic and industrial perspectives on how sustainable manufacturing can support a greener future.

Sincere thanks to all speakers, participants, partners for their valuable contributions and insightful discussions. FESRC also gratefully acknowledges the British Council for funding this initiative, and both University of Birmingham and The British University in Egypt for their support in making this dissemination workshop along with the SPARK project a successful platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and future partnerships.
