My approach was to create challenging activities that required students to think hard about the ‘right things so they could develop a deep conceptual understanding of the big ideas of science

When should we use models?
A model helps to clarify thinking and resolve to understand. A model is best used after the scientific explanation. If a model is used too early on, students don’t appreciate its explaining power and instead only see its literal parts. Setting project work around models can be incredibly motivating
