*SHA'BAAN: MERITS, DO'S AND DONT'S*

*Fast of the 15th Sha'baan:*

It is desirable that one fasts in the month of Sha'baan as much as one can. However, if fasting in Sha'baan is going to affect the fasting of Ramadhan then one should refrain from it.

Regarding the fast of the 15th of Sha'baan, it is reported in Ibn Majah on the authority of Hadhrat Ali Radhiallahu Anhu that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam mentioned: “When the 15th night of Sha'baan comes, on that night offer Nafal Salah and keep fast."

Although this narration is weak and we cannot conclude that the fast on the 15th of Sha'baan is Sunnah, nevertheless the fast would be desirable considering other factors such as:
• The fasts of the first half of Sha'baan have special merits as can be seen from the practice of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
• The virtues of the fasts of Ayyaamul Beedh (i.e. 13th, 14th and 15th of the Islamic month) have been mentioned in the ahaadeeth.
• A large number of the elders of the Ummah have been observing the fast of the 15th of Sha'baan.

Therefore, it is advisable to fast the 15th of Sha'baan as an optional (nafl) fast. One can also keep a fast of qada on this day and it is hoped that he can also benefit from the merits of this fast.
