How does the body fight back?
Your body has a part inside of you that fights viruses and other things that might hurt you. This is called your immune system.
The immune system makes it harder for the virus to exist. It does this by raising the temperature of the body or giving you a fever. When this happens you probably will not feel very well, but it is a way your body fights to make you better.
The immune system also has special cells that track down and kill the virus. These cells also remember what they had to do to fight the virus so that the body can do it again in the future.
It is hard for people to get the same disease twice. However, viruses are good at changing which is why you can get a cold or the flu every year.
You can help your body by washing your hands and avoiding touching hard surfaces like countertops. Viruses cannot live long by themselves outside of the body.
Check out this very cute video of how B-cells and T-cells in the body fight germs like viruses.
How the Immune System works This is a funny animation of all the parts of the Immune System and what they do. :)

What symptoms will you have if you have a virus?
Symptoms are slightly different for different viral infections but viruses like the common cold cause sinus congestion and sneezing, a sore throat and cough, body aches and a low fever. These are all signs that the body is fighting a virus and usually start 2 to 14 days after you have been exposed to the virus.
The symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, coughing and shortness of breath. The symptoms of many diseases are similar so a medical doctor will have to run tests to find out what is wrong.
Here is a diagram showing symptoms of influenza or the flu, a disease that is common every year:

How does a virus attack the body?
Your body is made of millions of tiny little cells that do different things to help you live. These cells are constantly working to keep your body healthy. They do this by helping your body function and by making more healthy cells when needed.
Once a virus enters the body, it finds a cell to attack. The virus wants to force the cell to make more viruses instead of healthy cells. It does this by grabbing a hold of the cell, breaking the wall of the cell and then forcing the cell to make viruses.
These new viruses are released into the body and they find cells to attack. This continues until the body brings its defenses to fight back.
Here is a picture of how viruses attack the cells of the body. Start on the picture labelled “VIRUS” and follow the numbers around the circle.

How does a virus spread from person to person?
Viruses must move from one person to another but they cannot walk, run or otherwise move on their own so they have to wait until someone helps them move. They do this by staying in fluids like the mucous in your nose or mouth until they come in contact with another person.
If you have a virus and sneeze or cough on another person, they could get sick. This is because the virus is waiting in your mouth and nose and moves when you sneeze. If you sneeze or cough on a counter top or door handle, the virus could also come out and wait there until someone picks it up without knowing. Because of this, governments are currently advising people to practice “social distancing” or staying away from people in public.
To do this put your hands straight out to your sides. If you can touch another person (other than your family), you are too close to them. Like the picture below:
