On the occasion of celebrating African heritage, I would like to share with you one of the special results of my research in Egyptian archaeology. These seeds of watermelon, a fruit that we like in summer for quenching our thirst, are in fact one of many pieces of evidence for trade and cultural interconnections between Egypt and other cultures in Africa since domesticated watermelon was not native to Egypt and originated in arguably southern regions in East Africa. These seeds, which I extracted and analyzed from a soil sample taken from a100-year-old excavation by Reisner from a site dated to the reign of king Sequenre, his warrior queen Ahhotep, and their son Ahmose, known for "expelling the Hyksos" are the earliest evidence of domesticated water melon reliably identified and carbon dated from Egypt. The seeds date back to 1465 BCE, based on carbon dating conducted with high precision at the University of California labs.
This is a picture of the seeds taken under the microscope with scale indicating the actual size. After domesticated watermelon was introduced to Egypt from southern regions in Africa, it continued to be traded with other cultures, even today in Libya they call it the "Egyptian dalla. i.e melon'"
