Every Parthian Coin Has the Same Name… Why?

Ever wonder whose face is on an ancient Parthian coin? For nearly 500 years, every Parthian ruler put the exact same name on their money: Arsaces (Arshak). Just like "Caesar" in Rome, it became a royal title rather than an individual name—leaving modern historians with a massive puzzle to solve.

Learn how numismatists use royal portraits, mint marks, and hoard data to figure out which "King Arsaces" actually issued the coin.

Discovered in 1979 near the Pyramid of Teti, this Old Kingdom tomb belonged to a 6th Dynasty vizier who held 16 royal titles. Across its vibrant, painted limestone walls are detailed scenes of daily life, dozens of named individuals, and even three named pet dogs—Bai, Bak, and Idi.

The tomb holds two major historical mysteries: the complete absence of Nikauisesi's wife from the reliefs, and an ink inscription recording a burial date that suggests Pharaoh Teti ruled five years longer than previously recorded.

Over 4,200 years ago, Egyptian governor and scout Harkhuf returned from an eight-month expedition deep into Nubia with a caravan loaded with exotic goods—and one very special traveler.

When Egypt’s newly crowned child pharaoh, Pepy II, received the news, he didn't care about the gold, ivory, or incense. Instead, the 6-year-old king sent back an urgent, anxious royal decree containing one primary instruction: bring the dancing performer to the palace immediately, inspect him 10 times a night, and whatever you do, don't let him fall into the Nile.

Harkhuf was so proud of this royal letter that he had it carved word-for-word onto the facade of his tomb at Qubbet el-Hawa. In this video, we explore Harkhuf’s four dangerous expeditions beyond Egypt’s southern border, the shifting balance of power in ancient Nubia, and the surprisingly human story behind one of the Old Kingdom's most unique surviving documents.

A lot of you have asked about the next Greco-Persian Wars episode. Good news: Part VII, the finale, is written — it's a longer one since it ties the whole series together — and I'm putting the video together now, hoping to get it out this month.

I've gotten similar questions about the Peloponnesian War series too. Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about that either. In fact, that's still very much on the agenda, and it's getting a huge revamp.

As the research, writing, filming, and editing are all done by yours truly, it takes a while to put these out. So that you’re not waiting too long for content, and also so the algorithm doesn’t forget about the channel, you'll see more shorter videos in between the longer ones, stuff that I think is interesting but may not fit into a longer program.

Also in the pipeline: the final episode of the 'Ancient Egypt: Dynasty by Dynasty' series, covering the Ptolemaic dynasty, and a mega video on the Neo-Assyrian Empire, currently in the recording phase.

The goal is to get all four of these out by the end of this year. If you don’t see these coming out by then, I give you full permission to bug the hell out me until they’re released!

Adad-guppi lived to be 104 years old, survived the fall of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, and placed her son, Nabonidus, on the throne of Babylon. This is her incredible story—told in her own voice on a 2,500-year-old funerary stela discovered in Harran.

In this video, we explore one of the rarest historical documents from ancient Mesopotamia: an autobiographical inscription carved into stone by the mother of Babylon’s last native king. When most people visit Giza, they focus almost entirely on the Great Pyramids. But right next to Khufu's monument lies a sprawling, 4,500-year-old grid of tombs that the average tourist completely overlooks: the Western Cemetery (also known as the West Field).

This December, I’ll be heading back to Egypt—and this time, I’d love for you to come with me!

We’ll explore some of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in the world, from the Pyramids of Giza and Saqqara to the temples and tombs of ancient Thebes, along with some of ancient Egypt’s greatest treasures at the new Grand Egyptian Museum.

Reading about the pharaohs, pyramids, temples, and tombs is one thing—standing in front of their monuments is another. Whether it’s your first trip to Egypt or a return visit, come experience it alongside a group of like-minded history lovers.
