World Down Syndrome Day

World Down Syndrome Day We are here to make them part of our community in Egypt! Worlds Down syndrome day (WDSD) is on the 21st of March of every year.

On this day, Down syndrome organizations and international organizations around the worlds organize and participate in events to raise public awareness of Down syndrome. This date was chosen as the number 21 signifies the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome. Down syndrome was first determined as a chromosomal disorder in 1959 by French pediatrician and geneticist, Jerom

e Lejeune. Down syndrome is a very real and important subject, because people with this chromosomal disorder are constantly affecting people’s lives in many ways. One in every 733 babies is born with Down syndrome, recent studies say. In the United States alone, there are more than 400,000 people living with Down syndrome. Since the event started in 2006, it has grown into a global celebration accounted in all organization’s calendar as a day dedicated to those who have Down syndrome. As Rotaract Club of Alexandria Cosmopolitan we have our share in organizing events for children with Down syndrome in Egypt . We started having our own event in 2009 where we had a day totally dedicated to these kids. Our last event was very successful and we were able to put a smile on the faces of 500 children.

Happy World Down Syndrome Day, Happy Mother’s Day. Here’s to all the beautiful souls out there.

Happy World Down Syndrome Day, Happy Mother’s Day.

Here’s to all the beautiful souls out there.

When I received a prenatal diagnosis, one of the things that helped me most was seeing images of other kids that had Down syndrome living life to the fullest.
That pregnancy was hard for me. I felt a lot of feelings that I beat myself up over, but now I know they were normal and valid for what I was going through. They were triggered by fear and the unknown of what life with a child with Down syndrome would be like.
Fast forward a few years later and The Lucky Mama Project was born. A way to support other moms through the diagnosis, while also showing everyone how beautiful life with someone who has Down syndrome can be.
Today I am so proud to be Ivy’s mama, and it gives me great pleasure to share this photo of nine beautiful, loved, and worthy kids living life to the fullest!

To all of the expecting lucky mamas, and those who are still early in this journey, know that it’s okay to grieve the baby you thought you would have, but look at these faces and know that it is going to be okay. The beauty that comes from loving someone with Down syndrome is something that most people will never have the privilege of knowing, but you will!
