The event is part of the EU-funded Pro-GREEN-LABs Project, implemented in collaboration with Alexandria University, Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, and several international universities and institutions.

“Rural Heritage: Source of Inspiration and a Driver of Development”
📍 April 13–18, 2026

We are pleased to share some images capturing the progress and key moments of the Egyptian Team of the International Workshop dedicated to exploring rural heritage as a source of inspiration and a driver of sustainable development.
Organized by the Higher School of Architecture, Audiovisual and Design (ESAD), in partnership with the National School of Architecture and Urban Planning (ENAU), (Tunisia) the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Alexandria University (Egypt), as well as the Centre of Excellence for Heritage Innovation, University of Portsmouth (UK).
The workshop was coordinated by the Scientific Committee:

The Spring School Retrofitting for Resilience - Case Study: Victor Emmanuel Square

Students will continue developing their work within the Environmental Urban Design course, building on what they have started—towards a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the square.

✨ A New Milestone ✨

We are pleased to announce the first international scientific publication documenting the activities of the City Transformation Lab (CT Lab), Faculty of Fine Arts – Alexandria University, through a chapter in the report:
International Knowledge Exchanges in Architecture and Urban Planning, published by the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), 2026.

The publication positions our work within a broader regional framework among schools of architecture & planning across the Euro-Mediterranean region, fostering collaboration & shared academic initiatives.

It shows that knowledge exchange is not only conceptual, but a practice capable of empowering students & researchers, local capacities & innovative solutions rooted from Mediterranean urban contexts.

It also bridges academic research with policy-making & professional practice, supporting more resilient, inclusive & sustainable cities.

يسعدنا الإعلان عن أول نشر علمي دولي يوثق أنشطة المعمل، من خلال المشاركة بفصل ضمن تقرير
International Knowledge Exchanges in Architecture and Urban Planning
الصادر عن الاتحاد من أجل المتوسط (UfM) لعام 2026.

هذا النشر ينقل خبراتنا إلى نطاق إقليمي أوسع ضمن مدارس العمارة والتخطيط في المنطقة اليورو-متوسطية، لتعزيز تبادل المعرفة ودعم شراكات أكاديمية ممتدة.

ويعكس أن تبادل المعرفة ليس مجرد إطار نظري، بل ممارسة قادرة على تمكين الطلاب والباحثين والقدرات المحلية، وابتكار حلول تنبع من السياقات الحضرية المتوسطية.

ويعزز أهمية الربط بين البحث الأكاديمي وصنع القرار والممارسة المهنية، في مواجهة التحديات الحضرية، لمدن أكثر مرونة وشمولًا واستدامة.

Day 5: Closing Day— A Milestone, Not the End

The Spring School Retrofitting for Resilience concluded with students presenting their design visions for Victor Emmanuel Square, after days of exploration, analysis, and collaborative work.

The closing brought together faculty, guest speakers, and the workshop team, where five student groups shared their ideas and engaged in thoughtful discussions around their proposals.

It was a moment of reflection, exchange, and celebration of the journey so far.

But this is not the final step.

Students will continue developing their work within the Environmental Urban Design course, building on what they have started—towards a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the square.

We look forward to meeting these projects again at the end of the semester.

اليوم الخامس — محطة… وليست النهاية

اختُتمت فعاليات المدرسة الربيعية Retrofitting for Resilience بعرض الطلاب لرؤاهم التصميمية لتطوير ميدان فيكتور عمانويل، بعد أيام من الرصد، والتحليل، والعمل الجماعي.

شهدت الجلسة الختامية حضور فريق الورشة والمحاضرين، حيث قدمت خمس مجموعات طلابية أفكارها، وتبادلت النقاش حول مقترحاتها.

لحظة تجمع بين التأمل فيما تحقق، والاحتفاء برحلة مليئة بالتجربة والتعلم.

لكنها ليست النهاية.

سيستكمل الطلاب تطوير مشروعاتهم ضمن مسار مادة Environmental Urban Design، انطلاقًا مما بدأوه خلال الورشة، نحو فهم أعمق ورؤى أكثر شمولًا للميدان.

على أمل أن نلتقي بهذه المشروعات مرة أخرى في نهاية الفصل الدراسي، في عرض أكثر شمولًا واتساعًا. ✨

Day 4 — Designing the Future

The fourth day of the Spring School Retrofitting for Resilience marked the beginning of the design phase.

The day opened with the final lecture of the workshop, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mai Karram and Dr. Hebah Moanis, exploring how buildings can contribute to reducing urban heat. The session introduced students to building envelope strategies and their role in minimizing thermal loads, both inside buildings and within the surrounding urban environment.

Following this, students transitioned into design mode—working in groups to translate their analysis into ideas, addressing the square’s challenges and proposing urban and design interventions.

The day concluded with a collective discussion, where each group presented its initial vision and received feedback.

From here, ideas begin to take form.

Students continue refining their concepts—turning observations into proposals, and thoughts into drawings.

Tomorrow, we meet the outcomes.

اليوم الرابع — بداية التصميم

شهد اليوم الرابع من المدرسة الربيعية Retrofitting for Resilience بداية مرحلة التصميم.

بدأ اليوم بآخر محاضرات الورشة، والتي قدمتها أ.م.د. د. مي كرم ود. هبة مؤنس، حيث تناولت المحاضرة دور المباني في تقليل حرارة المدن، من خلال استراتيجيات تصميم غلاف المبنى وتأثيرها على تقليل الحمل الحراري داخل المبنى وخارجه.

بعدها بدأ الطلاب العمل في مجموعات تصميمية، لترجمة تحليلاتهم إلى أفكار، والتعامل مع مشكلات الميدان من خلال مقترحات تصميمية وتخطيطية.

واختُتم اليوم بنقاش جماعي بين المجموعات، حيث عرض كل فريق رؤيته الأولية وتبادلوا الآراء حولها.

ومن هنا تبدأ الأفكار في التشكّل.

ليستكمل الطلاب تطوير مقترحاتهم—تحويل ما رصدوه إلى أفكار، وما فكّروا فيه إلى رسومات.

وغدًا… نلتقي بنتائج الرحلة. ✨

Day 3 — From Reading to Structuring

The third day of the Spring School Retrofitting for Resilience marked a shift from observation to structured understanding.

The day began with a lecture by Dr. Israa Mahmoud from Politecnico di Milano, introducing nature-based solutions and how natural systems can be integrated to address challenges in public spaces.

Students then worked in groups to develop analytical maps of Victor Emmanuel Square across four key dimensions: social, urban, mobility, and environmental.

After the break, the day continued with a lecture by Dr. Maisaa Fayed on healthy cities and their guiding principles, linking urban conditions to public health and well-being.

Students returned to their work, refining their analyses and building a clearer picture of the square’s conditions and challenges.

The day concluded with a discussion, where groups exchanged insights across the four dimensions, connecting their findings into a comprehensive understanding.

The phase of observation and exploration ends.

Tomorrow, a new role begins—the role of the designer and the critic.

اليوم الثالث — من القراءة إلى التنظيم

شهد اليوم الثالث من المدرسة الربيعية Retrofitting for Resilience انتقالًا من مرحلة الرصد إلى بناء فهم منظم للميدان.

بدأ اليوم بمحاضرة للدكتورة إسراء محمود من جامعة Politecnico di Milano، تناولت فيها مفهوم nature-based solutions ودور الطبيعة في معالجة تحديات الفراغات العامة.

بعدها، عمل الطلاب في مجموعات على تجميع وتحليل مخرجاتهم، وبناء خرائط الميدان عبر أربعة أبعاد رئيسية: الاجتماعي، العمراني، الحركي، والبيئي.

وبعد الاستراحة، استكملنا بمحاضرة للدكتورة ميساء فايد حول المدن الصحية ومعاييرها، حيث تم الربط بين البعد الحضري وصحة السكان وجودة حياتهم.

ثم عاد الطلاب لاستكمال العمل، وصياغة فهم أوضح لإشكاليات الميدان وخصائصه.

واختُتم اليوم بنقاش جماعي، لربط الأبعاد المختلفة معًا.

وبذلك تنتهي مرحلة الحصر والاستكشاف والملاحظة، لتبدأ من الغد مرحلة دور المصمم والناقد.
