Skills Children Learn from LEGO

1. Fine Motor Skills

Using LEGO bricks is the perfect opportunity for building fine motor skills! LEGO bricks are a great manipulative to work the fingers as children build and even pick up LEGO pieces. Children love the thrill of building and they can do this for hours, building up strong little muscles in their hands that will help them do other skills, such as learn to write.

2. Cooperative Play

It’s so easy for LEGO building to turn to a time of imaginary bliss with adventures, heros, villians, animals, and even family members. Using LEGO minifigures and bricks with other peers gives children the same skills they would learn in dramatic play or from using a dollhouse.

LEGO creations become a form of storytelling. It’s the little lost horse who is trying to find her stable, and her friends help her along the way. Or a mother is taking care of her son who is headed to school for the day.

3. A Sense of Accomplishment

When children have finished their amazing work of art, they are beaming to show their creations. They have made something they are incredibly proud of, which is good for their hands as well as good for their heart! Most of the time they come up with an idea in their heads, then they begin to piece it together.

They are so excited for the houses they build for the minifigure families to play in or for the cars that the minifigures will drive around in their LEGO community. As they develop self-confidence, their excitement leads to making items with more and more complex purposes!

4. Persistence

Building with LEGO bricks sometimes leads to heartbreak. A beautiful tower comes crumbling down with one wrong move.

Initially, this is frustrating. I’ve learned though that children who use LEGO bricks regularly are not defeated by this. Instead, they make it again. I’ve even accidentally wrecked a masterpiece. And I am always surprised when I hear “It’s OK, I can build it again!”

5. Solving a puzzle

It doesn’t matter whether a child uses an instruction booklet or builds completely from their own imagination. They are solving a puzzle! When children are picking up little pieces around them to form a building, plane, or creature, they are bringing order out of chaos. A bucket of LEGO bricks becomes a new opportunity!

6. Science

Cause and effect is one of the first science lessons a child learns! It is so fun to watch the thrill that a child has to build a tower as tall as possible. It gets higher and higher, soon over their heads. Then they all hold their breath as the super tall tower falls over.
Science is the driving component behind all creations that a child has. The foundation of science is to come up with an idea and to prove it practically. LEGOs do this naturally through imagination. A child simply comes up with an idea then develops it.

7. Technology
Put simply, technology is using new techniques to accomplish a task. LEGOs teach children to use basic materials to complete a task.

8. Engineering

This is all over LEGOs! Want to build a bridge? Then you must figure out what it takes to stand up. Children quickly learn that a tower made of a single column quickly falls. By creating a stable base, they open up a new world of possibilities! Soon they will have pyramids or maybe even the Eiffel Tower!

9. Creativity

Every LEGO creation is a form of art. A child’s imagination is the only limit! Children become creators with the hundreds of tiny pieces. They can use wheels, shapes, and even “people” figures to build the ideas in their minds. It can be useful, entertaining, or even therapeutic.

10. Math

Volume, quantity, one to one correspondence, symmetry, patterns, and more all can show up when a child plays with LEGO

Let’s not forget addition and subtraction! When you give a child a limited number of Legos to complete their entire project, they learn that each one counts. They begin to understand that each and every brick, minifigure, and piece has a value! Children can even begin the complex task of rationing their supply to complete their masterpiece.

What is STEM Education?

STEM – it’s an acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

But it’s much more than an acronym – it’s potentially your passport for the future. Research has shown that students who study STEM are more creative, flexible and able to take advantage of the changes that are predicted in the workforce and workplaces of the future.

STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering, and math. STEM Education, a term initiated by the National Science Foundation, refers to an educational approach which integrates more than one of these disciplines. Science, technology, engineering, and math may seem like lofty subject matter for preschool children. In reality, preschoolers spontaneously engage in STEM activities indoors and out on a regular basis. With a little guidance from us, we can enhance children's opportunities to engage in STEM learning and develop their critical thinking skills.

While building with blocks, children can build bridges and ramps, incorporating engineering and math. They can add a technology component by researching these on the computer. Outdoors, children could help solve the problem of getting water to a garden they helped to plant, drawing on their science and engineering knowledge. Incorporating the use of children’s garden tools like rakes, shovels, and a wheelbarrow build on this activity to provide an even broader STEM experience.

STEM ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS

Go on a nature walk.
A nature walk can be a great outdoor STEM activity for children.Take a reusable bag and encourage your child to collect interesting objects she sees like small round stones, leaves, seed pods, or flowers. When you get home, help her sort her treasures into categories, such as color, texture, size, and shape.
Skills used: math and science

Do a cooking activity together.
Cooking with children is another way to engage kids in learning at home. Look up an interesting recipe together online. Follow the recipe letting your child help measure and mix.
Skills used: science, technology, and math

Build ramps to test which cars, balls, or marbles go the fastest.
Use a board, sheet of cardboard, or small table with one side elevated to make a ramp. Try rolling a variety of objects, two at a time down the ramp to see which is fastest. Record your findings on a chart.
Skills used: engineering and math

Set-up building activities with paper or plastic cups.
Give a challenge such as, "How high can you make a tower of cups?" Measure each tower and record their height.
Skills used: engineering and math

Explore the grocery store.
With your child, purchase some fruits and vegetables that you have never tried before. Before cutting up the fruits and vegetables, have your child predict what will be inside. Then, with careful supervision, have your child help you cut up small pieces to try. Invite your family members to a tasting party. Make a graph that shows everyone's favorites.
Skills used: science and math

Play with water.
Water is a rich STEM material and water play activities is a great way to engage kids. Provide a basin of water outside so you don't have to worry about spills. Provide tools to experiment with like a turkey baster, empty dish detergent bottles, plastic measuring cups, etc. to fill and compare.
Skills used: math and science

The possibilities for STEM education are endless. Children love to experiment, combine new substances, build, knock down, collect, sort, and have fun while learning. You were probably having your child do STEM activities at home and didn't know it. Look for additional opportunities to build STEM activities in your daily routine.

Teaching Your Kids to Appreciate What They Have

One of the ways that we’re teaching character to our child is by teaching them the value of what they have. It’s never too early to start teaching your kids to appreciate what they have. This could be accomplished by teaching them the value of money or serving the less fortunate. There are many other ways to do this, of course. But let’s talk about why it’s important to teach your kids to be appreciative.

4 Tips for Teaching Kids to Appreciate What They Have

✔ Point Out “The Little Things”

When we live in abundance, it’s easy to overlook all the tiny, wonderful moments that cost us nothing. When you experience one of these, be sure to stop and point it out to your child and remind them how lucky we are to have these experiences. How wonderful it is to feel the gentle pounding of rain on our faces, or smell the new flowers in spring. What a rich experience it is to watch a tiny insect crawling, or taste a decadent ice cream cone.

Appreciate the little things in life and your child will begin to do the same.

✔ Encourage Giving

When your child is always in a state of receiving, they may forget there are others who need things more than they do. Create opportunities for your child to give. There are times when your child may have an influx of gifts, such as birthday and Christmas. In these moments, ask them if they could pass along any of their toys that are used but in good condition, to someone less fortunate.

This reminds us of the mantra to “give back,” which is essential throughout life. And it helps to overcome any type of entitlement attitude that they might have.

✔ Give Them Small Jobs

From the time they are young, children can learn about the value of money by completing small jobs for cash. If your child is demanding that you buy them the latest game console, give them small jobs and help them learn to save their own money for it.

Sometimes our children don’t appreciate the things they have simply because they don’t understand the value of them, nor the time that goes into paying for the objects they have. When a child learns that things do not come easy or free, it helps them appreciate everything more.

It also encourages them to care for their possessions, because they know how long it took to save for them.

✔ Teach Them a Strong Work Ethic

When children learn to work hard, they are often more appreciative of their belongings. Teach your children to work diligently, no matter what their task may be. Then when there is something they wish to have, you can explain that you as the parent have to work hard for it in order to make the money necessary to buy it

Learn how to teach children self-control the right way with this collection of fun yet powerful self-regulation strategies and activities for kids!

Kindergarten can be an exciting time for both parents and children. The transition to full-day school brings new skills, new friends, and new opportunities and experiences, but while some kids make the transition with ease, others really struggle with the adjustment.

And who can blame them?!

While daycare and preschool offer a quiet, calming, play-based environment with small teacher/child ratios, kindergarten classrooms are loud and chaotic. The school day is filled with multiple transitions, and while the curriculum is still fun, the educational component can be challenging for little minds and hands, which brings me to the point of this post…

How to Teach Children Self-Control
Teaching children self-control is one of the most important things a parent can do for their kids. Some studies suggest that a child’s level of self-discipline at a young age can predict how successful – and happy – he will be later in life, and while some might argue against such findings, the facts remain the same: if you take the time to teach your child strategies for self-control now, you will be setting him up for long-term success at school, work, in his personal life, and beyond.

Here are 7+ strategies and activities to teach children self-control.

- Be clear about rules and expectations
This is especially important in young children. By explaining what the rules are, what’s expected, and what is and isn’t appropriate, and taking the time to give your child regular reminders, you are setting him up for success. The easier the rules are, and the more consistently you reinforce them, the easier it is for your kids to meet your expectations.

- Follow a predictable routine
We all know that kids thrive on consistency, and getting your children used to a predictable routine will not only help with the transition to full-day school, but also help set expectations as to what is expected throughout the day. By setting clear boundaries around different activities – learning, independent play, outdoor time, quiet time, eating, etc. – you can help teach the different types of self-regulation needed in the classroom and beyond.

- Remind! Remind! Remind!
The younger a child is, the more easily he can (and will) be distracted, so taking the time to give him reminders at regular intervals will go a long way in helping him learn the art of self-control.

- Use positive reinforcement
Reinforcement is a fabulous technique parents and caregivers can use to increase the likelihood that a child will repeat a desirable behavior, and while both positive and negative forms of reinforcement can help with teaching children self-control, research tends to suggest that positive reinforcement is the most effective. Sticker charts are a simple, yet effective, form of positive reinforcement that can be extremely motivating for kids.

- Always follow through!
As parents, we often hear about the importance of being consistent and following through with consequences. If you fail to follow through, your child won’t take you seriously, learn accountability, or figure out the difference between right and wrong. And while this makes perfect sense, what many parents forget is that the same holds true for rewards. If we neglect to make good on our promises, we take away the motivation our children need to make positive changes to their behavior, which can significantly impact our ability to teach our children self-control and self-discipline.

- Model positive behavior
Another important, yet often overlooked parenting strategy is the importance of being a good role model. Our children look up to us, and oftentimes want to mimic every single thing we do, and when we take the time to actively demonstrate our own self-regulatory behavior, we are setting our kids up for success. Thinking before acting, practicing deep breathing, being kind and compassionate to others, and using appropriate language to express our feelings are all positive ways to teach your child self-regulating behaviors to help develop self-control.

- Make self-discipline fun
When it comes to teaching self-control, there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. Every child has a different temperament, and what works for one may not work for another. The good news? There are HEAPS of great self-discipline activities for kids that feel more like play than work, offering a fabulous, stress-free way to help children with self-control issues.
