Research and development lab focused on digital education and semiotics.

The digital version of "Rehepapp ehk November" by Andrus Kivirähk is aimed to provide an augmented reading experience. The project complements the source novel with supportive materials: historical/social/cultural/literary commentary, multimedia, and tasks. Team behind the project includes graduate and PhD students from the Department of Semiotics in Tartu Univerisity. The main focus of our work is the practical application of the semiotic theory to educational cases.

Täna on 70. juubel meie transmeedia uurimisrühma juhendajal Peeter Toropil. Sellel puhul avasime veebilehel Haridus Ekraanil meie kultuurisemiootika professori akadeemilist tegevust ja teadusmõtet tutvustava kaardi “Ex libris professor Peeter Torop”. Haridus Ekraanil õppematerjalid tuginevad paljuski just Toropi teadustööle, milles põimuvad omavahel kultuurisemiootika, digipedagoogika ja transmeedia uuringud. On 10, March we read a course at the University of Warsaw, which was dedicated to Estonian culture and identity. Using our online materials “Identiteet Ekraanil” and the film “Tõde ja Õigus”, we have discussed the past and present life of Estonians, roots of Estonian culture and its authenticity, as well as various actual questions, which are related to personality, values and relationships with people. In spite of some urgent circumstances, which did not let us read everything we wanted, we were very glad for Polish and international students' interest in Estonia, Estonian language and culture. Now students have an opportunity to work with “Identiteet Ekraanil” online and we hope that it will help to answer their questions as well as open something new and interesting. We would like to thank the faculty of Modern Languages of the University of Warsaw and personally René Virks for the invitation and warm hospitality.

We are happy to introduce you our new free educational platform Loodus Ekraanil, which was developed for Jaan Tootsen’s film ‘Fred Jüssi. The Beauty of Being’ (“Fred Jüssi. Olemise ilu”). Loodus Ekraanil can be used as supportive material for school curriculum in science and nature related lessons as well as in literature, social and culture related classes. It will also be interesting for anyone who wants to learn more about nature and natural environment. Materials of our educational platform use Fred Jüssi’s unique understanding of nature, which was illustrated in Jaan Tootsen’s film. It discusses how nature was depicted in “Olemise ilu”; features of Estonian nature literature; nature in photo camera lens; as well as sound of nature and its unique ability of living silence.
Wishing you an enjoyable meeting with Fred Jüssi’s world.

Esileht - Õpikeskkond “Identiteet ekraanil”

Estonian epic film “Truth And Justice” (“Tõde ja Õigus”) which was recently shortlisted for the International Feature Oscar received an educational role with our free educational platform “Identity on Screen” (“Identiteet Ekraanil”). Our platform is made for gymnasium pupils and overviews a question of identity by means of Tammsaare’s famous novel. “Identity on Screen” discusses such question of identity as a relation of people with each other, values, environment and culture. A variety of interactive activities which opens valuable discussions makes learning experience more interesting and entertaining. “Identity on Screen” also has teachers’ guidelines which make use of our platform easy, efficient and enjoyable for any educational experience.

17, January Elektriteater showed a new Estonian documentary film “Fred Jüssi. The Beauty of Being” (‘Fred Jüssi. Olemise ilu’) for school teachers. After the screening it was possible to ask questions to the film cameraman Joosep Matjus as well as to get to know about our new educational platform ‘Nature on Screen’ (‘Loodus Ekraanil’), which is going to appear online while screening of the film in Estonian cinemas. We are grateful for the interest in our work and hope for further collaborations with schools and gymnasiums.

21, January at Tamme Gümnaasium as a part of presenting Semiotics Department of Tartu University we have given a workshop on a basis of our platforms 'History on Screen' and 'Identity on Screen'. We discussed previous century people's values and modern people's values. We also made an overview of some new notions from Soviet Estonia period as well as discussed what sources we use to learn about past. We hope that such practical workshops illustrate that semiotics can be not only a useful analytical tool but also an enjoyable and diverse science.

Our new educational environment "History on Screen" is now open for everyone interested. The main texts of the environment are the book by L. Tungal "The Little Comrade" and the film by M. Siimets of the same name. "History on Screen" invites you to reflect on how artistic texts communicate the past.
