Recent incidents involving AI systems acting autonomously have intensified calls for stronger oversight, with researchers warning that safeguards must keep pace as the technology becomes increasingly capable.

💻According to Meelis Kull, Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science, if we keep building increasingly intelligent AI systems without limits, then, based on where things stand today, we don't know how to control an AI that is vastly more intelligent than humans. Until we have better methods of control, we shouldn't build such systems

📣 Last call for Software Project proposals!

If your company or organisation still has a software idea sitting in a drawer somewhere, today is the day to send it our way.

We are still looking for a few more projects for the University of Tartu’s Software Project course. A project could be a web or mobile application, an internal tool, a prototype, an automation solution or another software challenge that a student team could work on during the semester.

📣 Got data, but not sure what more you could do with it?

We are looking for project proposals from companies and organisations for the University of Tartu’s Data Science and Machine Learning project courses.

Perhaps you have a dataset you would like to understand better, a process that could benefit from prediction or automation, or an idea for applying machine learning that you have not yet had the time or resources to test. During the semester, a team of students will work on your challenge, explore the data and test possible approaches.

💡 One such project came from accounting software company Trigon. Students developed a machine learning model that could recommend the correct account and VAT code based on purchase invoice data. The results were so promising that Trigon decided to buy the solution from the students and continue using it in its own product.

The company Trigon OÜ has decided to integrate into its accounting software a solution developed during a machine learning course at the University of Tartu’s Institute of Computer Science.

Perhaps you need a new web or mobile application, a tool to make an existing process easier, or a prototype to test an idea. During the semester, a team of final-year IT students will work on your challenge and develop a software solution using the skills they have gained throughout their studies.

🎓🍂The first PhD thesis defence of the autumn semester took place today. Congratulations to 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗯𝗮! Her thesis was titled “A Multi-Stakeholder Framework for Comparable and Repeatable Security Level Evaluation in Organizations” and she was supervised by Prof. Raimundas Matulevičius.

In her thesis she created the Framework for Security Level Evaluation (F4SLE). Beyond evaluating an organization’s security level, F4SLE enables sector-based comparison and addresses the diverse needs of NIS2 stakeholders. Its low entry barrier, compliance with standards, and hierarchical structure make self-assessment accessible even for organizations with low digital maturity, while ensuring compliance with privacy requirements. Furthermore, to ensure results remain comparable as threats and standards evolve, the thesis introduces MUSE, a method for updating evaluation instruments without losing the ability to compare new results with previous versions.

The usability of F4SLE was validated by nearly 300 service providers from the EU and Central America. Additionally, the framework’s ability to satisfy NIS2-based user stories for various stakeholders was tested, proving the principle of “collect data once, use it many times.

📊 UT Institute of Computer Science, together with partners from Finland and the Netherlands, will strengthen research data management capacity in Estonia.

The international ELEVATE-DM project, starting in 2027, has received funding through the European Commission’s highly competitive Twinning programme. The project aims to professionalise research data management and provide researchers with more systematic support. The solutions developed will first be implemented and tested at the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science.

💬 “Good data management should be a natural part of research, supported by clear principles, professional expertise and institutional support,” said Professor of Bioinformatics Hedi Peterson.

ELEVATE-DM brings together our long-standing partners from the ELIXIR network – CSC – IT Center for Science in Finland and the Dutch research data infrastructure Health-RI.

We invite companies and organisations to submit ideas for autumn semester course projects. A course project is an opportunity to bring students a real-life problem or idea, which they will work on in teams over the course of one semester, exploring possible solutions and testing them in practice.

Project topics may include, for example, creating a software solution, analysing data, applying machine learning or developing a digital product. 👩‍💻

𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐒𝐫𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐚 spent 11 years at the University of Tartu, first as a postdoctoral researcher and later as Professor of Internet of Things.
