More than 7,000 years ago, the people who lived and died at the Stone Age site of Kõnnu on Saaremaa wore ornaments made from animal teeth. But where did these animals come from, and were some selected differently than others?

As part of the FORAGER project, we are currently exploring and selecting, as shown in the photos, tooth pendant samples for strontium isotope and amelogenin analyses. Strontium isotopes will help determine whether the animals used for the pendants were local to Saaremaa or came from elsewhere, while amelogenin analysis of tooth enamel will reveal the s*x of the large ungulates whose teeth were transformed into ornaments.

🦌🦬🌍 Together, these methods will provide new insights into animal mobility, procurement practices, and the symbolic choices of Stone Age communities more than seven millennia ago.

👩‍🔬🔬🧬 What does it take for a small country to become a scientific powerhouse?

Ester Oras’ new article traces the rise of biomolecular archaeology in the Baltic countries 🇪🇪🇱🇻🇱🇹, from dependence on foreign laboratories to internationally recognised research centres.

Beyond telling this success story, the article contributes to ongoing discussions about diversity, equity and inclusion in science and how good scientific practices can flourish across geopolitical boundaries.

From foodways to mobility research, Archemy contributed to some fascinating discussions at this year's EAA Meeting in Athens, Europe's largest annual conference for archaeologists.

Our director Ester Oras co-organized the session "Social Foodways in Archaeology and Beyond" with Alice Toso (University of Bonn) under the theme Transforming Archaeology through Interdisciplinarity.
Meanwhile, Archemy’s member Raivo presented "Beyond the Local: Designing a Regional Strontium Baseline Map for the Baltic Sea Region", exploring new ways to understand movement and connectivity in the past.

A new interdisciplinary elective course in English will take place in the autumn semester in Tartu University: Introduction to Biomolecular Archaeology.
The course provides an overview of the main biomolecular analytical methods used in the study of archaeological and historical objects.
Lectures will be delivered by members of the Archemy research group, and several other experts.
