Sest kuhu iganes sa lähed - seal sa oled.

On Monday, the new laureates of the Ülo Pärnits Scholarship, the founder of Ülemiste City, were announced for the fifth time. Out of five laureates, three were from EKA and one of them was our third year student Valdek Laur @valdeklaur His work "Bluebird" was one of two creative works to receive the scholarship. The other one was "The passage of time" by Kaija Kohlmann-Genno and Anette Aas from EKA glass art.
"Bluebird" is an ode to high technology and the dreams of future, but most importantly a tribute to the people building it - many of whom work in Ülemiste's ICT companies.
The sculpture consists of a massive portal, denoting the road of aspiration - often intimidating and inviting at the same time, aesthetically brutalistic and clustered, both strange and familiar. Juxtaposing the portal is a small cast bluebird, sitting on top of a vectorized pedestal, dozens of meters away. Barely visible, unreachable, but still at sight. In the end, reaching the bluebird is not important, only the strive is. Because no matter where you go - there you are.

"Meeting with Bach"
Musical notation, iron
Tutors: Urmas Lüüs, Nils Hint
The sculpture reflects my long-enduring interest in Bach’s music, which I have combined with my other big passion, glowing iron. The piece is representing the melody of the first two tacts of the second part of organ sonata BWV 528. The sculpture represents a novel approach to writing musical notes.
The piece consists of 19 iron bars. The first two bars represent sharp signs, the next 17 bars represent notes. The length of each bar was calculated from the length of the piano strings of a specific note. I measured all of the strings from a concert piano and resized them proportionally.
To mark the rhythm, I used punching and sharps are marked by a round dent at the upper right part of the bar. Natural that negates the sharp is marked with a dent on the side of the bar.
Technical info:
The piece weighs about 353kg, the whole length of the bars is 27,94 m.
Kaia Ansip master thesis "Broken Forests"
Cast metals
“Broken Forests” depicts the events of a recent forest fire in Portugal that irrevocably transformed the surrounding landscape before everyone’s eyes. The trauma of this apocalyptic experience has had a profound impact on the author’s relationship with the land that suddenly seems dangerous and unpredictable. The work is a mixture of longing for former lives and places, compassion, fear, and care. It expresses concern and love for a place taken over by eucalyptus plantations and peoples’ selfish needs.
The airy bark of the cork tree, which grows naturally in Portugal, makes it resistant to fire; while the eucalyptus, which comes from abroad, is highly flammable. The two contrasting species work to separate the past from the present, irreconcilable worlds.
To materialize the idea, the bark of the cork oak is used as molds. Cork bark is resistant to low melting temperatures; but at high temperatures, the material was destroyed. In both cases, resilience and perishability are recorded in the imitations.

SPLÄSH OF GOLD
Sand cast coins
Tutors: Piret Hirv, Eve Margus
Honestly, what a f**king waste of money. That’s what I expect the observer’s greed to tell me. Money has a very powerful effect on the mind and taps into a very selfish place. So how do you know that money holds influence over you? How do you know if you have enough? You don’t, others do. The majority of people, especially the wealthy, know the language of money and how influential it is: it whispers ideas and thoughts into your mind and builds confidence in your ideas, actions, speech, etc. Despite the greed, I focus on dismissing the current manipulative effect of money and giving it a new yet aesthetically pleasing value, a sentiment that can’t be spent.
Estonian Academy of Arts’ Graduation Show TASE ’22 will be open until 9th of June. Madis’s works are exhibited in our main building, room C301.

Pilvi Tammoja master thesis "Decaeon"
The objects I make are interpretations of real and imagined memories. Visions of possible pasts and futures. Factual accuracy and authenticity are overshadowed by the haunting images of distorted reality. These ghostly dreams are looking for a way out of my mind. I give thoughts and memories a tangible shape, using objects and materials discarded by other people. I study the stories that these objects contain, create alternative narratives for them and add them to my world.
How would the world sound if the voices of the forsaken were amplified?

Everyone wants to find peace of mind and balance. Everyone is striving for it. The search for the “self” is central to my work. Often creating fragility through strong and natural materials through a variety of techniques, I create persuasive architectural forms. I designate each with intentional and directional titles; however, the minimalism at play allows for generous and sought-after interpretation by the viewer.

"In Search of Fuzzy Craft"
Lithic objects - marble, brass
The development of human society seems to have come to its peak, but what we believe does not bring us a brighter future. With society moving at a catastrophic rate, we are slowly losing grasp of reality. Our connections to the environment have blurred out. Life in the current iteration of human society leads me to reconsider the established order of things by means of investigations on blurriness as an expressive mode through exploration in the medium of stone.
Although this coupling of blurred technique and expression on one hand with lithic materiality on the other may seem paradoxical, my project’s investigations have their origins in my own experiences with photography and linguistic studies. The written thesis discusses blurriness from visual and linguistic perspectives and its relevance to modern society, which unfolds fundamental questions about material agency in my own practice.
Cutting into the stone takes away the volume as well as its opacity. The plain white surface of marble obscures the inner structure and an image emerges when the light comes through. Its lack of definition avoids denoting the arbitrary relation between concept and form. The perceived image depends not only on the form but its interaction with light. The series of stonework is not crafted to be self-contained objects but presents a phenomenon that interrogates the question of meaning-making through perceiving and understanding.
You can see the works until 9th of June Rotermanni 7, Tallinn.
