Häid pühi / Happy holidays from (some of) EKA animation department!!! 🫶🫶🫶

At the end of November 2nd year MA students visited Maajaam for a workshop with the cool and friendly multimedia artist Timo T***s. The task of the workshop was to take apart old fax machines and make something out of the parts. Some made fully working interactive electrically powered devices trying their hand at wiring, coding and soldering for the first time while others made more manual aesthetic / sculptural pieces spending a lot of time cutting and screwing things together. Everyone got some technical insights into the inner workings of machines and most importantly practiced making something out of nothing, which is sometimes what making art is actually all about!

“The Eastern Rain” by Milly Yencken was recently nominated for the Emile Awards! Tonight we go to the ceremony to celebrate all the wonderful films that have been nominated this year!

EKA Animation department was invited by Animest Bucharest International Animation Festival to be a guest school as part of the AFN Edu program. AFN Edu is aimed at reaching and developing young filmmakers by introducing them to the world of animation industry and introducing various animation schools to each other. Our project coordinator Lyza Jarvis went to Animest with 10 students from MA and BA to represent the school. The program was hosted at UNTC and we got a tour of .unatc

Other than the AFN Edu program many other things happened!

Lyza gave a masterclass on how EKA animation is navigating the rise in popularity of experimental and non-narrative works from students.
Students participated in screenings and Q&As of the legendary Brothers Quay!
Students went to witness PITCHplease, where our friends from previous Fest Anca Student Forum visits and pitched their projects. (And won awards! Congratulations!!!) and attended the Meet the Authors where previous Erasmus+ exchange student talked about her film Stone of Destiny 🐎

Overall action packed and full of new insights! Thank you Animest!

Just last week we visited Student Forum as one of their alumni guests!

Each year Fest Anča hosts the Student Forum where various schools of animation from all over EU come together to discuss education, animation filmmaking, the value of art, and in general the important topics of the world. We are grateful to be able to join each year and have this network of animation education brought together!

This year we got to
• see very insightful presentations from and on their curriculum and philosophies in animation and art education.
• support , who joined us for a semester in Erasmus+ exchange last autumn, during her pitching of her new MA diploma film
• got to see a super inspiring presentation from and hangout with her outside of Estonia
• and in general meet a bunch of cool educators, students & professionals who we can now call friends:)
+ so many more informative presentations, case studies & conversations

Last Friday, on June 13 at 5 pm, the screening of the final theses of the Estonian Academy of Arts’ Animation Department, TASE Anima ’25, took place at the Sõprus cinema.
The works of students Anne Lucas, Kate Jansone, Paulina Belik, Maya Chaudhary, Nataliia Domini, Timofei Jerjomenko, Annaliisa Lepik, Natalya Mirzoyan, Léo Dominique Mourey, Katrina Oll, Mia Rulli, Yiyang Sun, Alex Toodu, Kaisa Vallaots, Lukas Wind and Shunyuan Yao were screened. Congratulations to everyone!

The welcoming drinks at the screening were by Punch Club.

Congratulations to our alumna Evridiki Papaiakovou and our teacher Anu-Laura Tuttelberg for their awards at Animafest Zagreb! Evridiki and Anu-Laura were not able to be at Animafest for the awards ceremony but thankfully Lucija Mrzljak was there to receive the awards for them!
