Ten Master's students pitched thesis film projects and received the green light from the committee. Now there is nothing to do but to produce the films and defend them in the Spring. Good luck!

OPEN LECTURE BY FILM DISTRIBUTION EXPERT GITTE HANSEN
January 25, 2022 at Tallinn hall in Tallinn University

An open lecture by Gitte Hansen, a documentary film distribution expert, will take place at Tallinn University on January 25 from 10:00 to 13:00 as part of the documentary film training program "Ice and Fire Docs". The sale and distribution of documentaries is often a painful process for filmmakers, all the more so as the market has changed dramatically in recent years. Funding schemes and distribution channels have changed, and the Covid19 pandemic has undoubtedly brought about major changes. But there are also many basic principles about selling and distributing movies that are always worth considering. In addition to Gitte Hansen's lecture, the struggle of an Estonian documentary "A Loss of Something Ever Felt" in the era of international sales and distribution during the pandemic is also discussed. The event is moderated by producer and director Marianna Kaat.

10:00 - 10:20 Gathering, COVID proof checking.
We offer coffee, tea and light snacks.

10:25 - 10:30 Welcoming words

10:30 - 11:15 Lecture by Gitte Hansen

11:15 - 11:45 Liis Nimik, the producer of the documentary "A Loss of Something Ever Felt" from her experience with the sale and distribution of the film.

Gitte Hansen's open lecture takes place within the framework of the Estonian-Finnish documentary film training program "Ice and Fire Docs", organized by the Estonian Documentary Guild, the Estonian Film Institute and the Finnish Documentary Guild.

The event is for free and discussion will be in English!

January 25 at 10:00-13: 00 in the Tallinn Hall of Tallinn University Mare House.
Participation on the basis of COVID certificate. We ask everyone to wear a mask indoors!

RIHO VÄSTRIK, perpetuum mobile - his own wide experience both as director and producer has guided us into the complex world of documentary production, from finding the stories to pitching and financing them. He is also one of the master minds behind our programme, to which he devotes himself genuinely.

1 | ONE THING YOU WANT TO PASS TO STUDENTS
First, acquire professional skills and learn the rules of the game, then you can break them if you wish.
Think originally, don’t let yourself to be captured into the restrictive frames, but don’t think that the history starts from you.
Keep your eyes open, be curious and cordial.

2 | ONE THING YOU HAVE LEARNED FROM STUDENTS
I have got a lot of energy from dealing with young people. It has also disciplined me a lot and stimulated my own creative thinking. So, teaching is not only giving, but mutual sharing.

3 | YOUR OWN MOST IMPORTANT TEACHER
I believe strongly in cultural continuity. My professor was Boris Frumin, he got his education from VGIK, so somehow I am a carrier of the VGIK values (though I haven’t studied there myself). Every documentary that I have produced or directed during 20 years has taught me something as well. Learning by doing goes for me very well.

A Professor who shares hints about the unusual by introducing us with touching and influential documentaries in the history of cinema.

HE SAYS | The main features of documentary today provide a useful starting-point for an attempt to map out the principal contours of the documentary terrain. Viewers approach documentary with different sets of expectations, and audiences apply different frames of reference when assessing the gains or pleasures to be derived from watching documentaries.

1 | ONE THING YOU WANT TO PASS TO STUDENTS
I want the students to learn the visible structure of film and the underlining invisible structure of the cinema.

2 | ONE THING YOU HAVE LEARNED FROM STUDENTS
I have learned pure mindedness, commitment, eagerness, giftedness and helpfulness.

3 | YOUR OWN MOST IMPORTANT TEACHER
London-based professor Raymond Durgnat. He gave me a lot of inspiration. He gave me also this idea that when you do something you are personally involved. Totally. Many others as well.

1 | ONE THING YOU WANT TO PASS TO STUDENTS
Take film-making very seriously but do not take yourself too seriously and never be afraid to laugh at yourself
Believe in yourself: the original idea is always better than a copy
Be flexible and open to changes: "Look forward, don't look back!"
Keep the focus (both in life and when with camera)
Put the people you are filming first: it is they who put food on your table
Learn to own up to your own mistakes, then try not to repeat them
Delete the unnecessary when editing: "Keep it simple!"

2 | ONE THING YOU HAVE LEARNED FROM STUDENTS
Ability to learn from each individual talent and strength
New ways of seeing and interpreting the world
Enthusiasm, curiosity, vitality
Opportunity to encounter technical challenges

3 | YOUR OWN MOST IMPORTANT TEACHER
The skyline and an erratic boulder of my home-beach have been my most important teachers. They taught me to see the world in a grain of sand. Now I have made a short film about them called "Wombstone" (eesti k. "Emakivi"), it will be premiered next spring.

Last Friday some of the documentary students had an exam in the course called Story of Image and Colour. Each work needed to answer to the question - What does your soul yearns for?

Mõnel dokumentaalfilmi tudengil oli möödunud reedel eksam aines Kujundi- ja värvusõpetus. Eksamitöö pidi vastama küsimusele - Mida hing igatseb?
