The European Central Bank traineeship pays EUR 1,170 a month, which looks like the weakest offer we have posted. It is not. The ECB also pays for your accommodation in Frankfurt.

Rent is what eats a traineeship grant. The Commission pays 1,538 and you find your own flat in Brussels. The ECB pays less on paper and covers the room. Do that arithmetic before you decide.

You can select up to three areas of interest. Pick three and write the cover letter to those three specifically. A generic letter across 33 policy areas reads as no preference at all.

Read two recent publications from the team you are targeting and reference them. The whole process takes one to three months, so the earlier your file is in, the more rounds you sit in.

The Court of Justice of the European Union pays trainees around EUR 2,400 a month in Luxembourg. That is the highest paid traineeship in the EU institutions, and almost nobody talks about it.

Everyone chases Brussels. The Court pays roughly 60 percent more, and it takes graduates from any field, not only lawyers.
⠀

The Chambers traineeship is the one everyone applies for. The 13 administrative directorates take graduates of any field, from IT to communications to budget, and the competition there is a fraction of what it is in the Chambers. Same grant, same building, same five months.

The Council of the European Union pays trainees EUR 1,538.16 a month to work in Brussels for five months. Applications for the February 2027 intake are open now.

110 places a year. Most people who could apply never hear about it in time.

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗚𝗘𝗧

1. EUR 1,538.16 per month for five months

2. Travel allowance if you live more than 50 km from Brussels

3. Accident insurance paid in full by the Council

4. A monthly amount for Council restaurants and cafeterias
⠀
5. Work in policy, law, administration, communications, translation or IT
⠀
𝗪𝗛𝗢 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗟𝗬

EU nationals, plus nationals of candidate countries that have signed an accession treaty. Bachelor’s degree or higher by the closing date. Very good English or French plus one other EU language. No more than six weeks of previous work or training in an EU institution.

𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗠𝗢𝗦𝗧 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘 𝗠𝗜𝗦𝗦

Up to six places every period are reserved for candidates with a recognised disability, and for those the rule is lower: you only need to be in your third year of study, not a graduate.

⏳ Applications close 15 September 2026 at 12:00 Brussels time. Selection runs October to December.

Most people apply to the Blue Book traineeship at the European Commission the wrong way. They pick three DGs by name recognition, write a motivation statement about how much they admire the EU, and hope.

30,000 apply. Around 1,700 get in. That is a 5 to 8 percent success rate, and almost none of the gap is about your grades.
