Silence
There's a place in the Karoo.
It's about 320km from bustling Cape Town.
It's called Sutherland and it's the home of the South African Large Telescope (SALT) for a very good reason.
The Karoo offers clear night skies that are littered with stars. The Southern Cross always points the way. If you lie flat on your back, mindful of the wildlife, you can reach out to the stars. Perhaps you can pluck a few to hold in your hand like a pile of diamonds or keep in your pocket.
Now, I don't know whether it is true, but they say it's so quiet there that you can actually hear the atmosphere gently brush the dry Earth late on a freezing wintry night. That is the primordial silence that I long for. Perfect for soul-searching.
