๐ณMaybe this is the most existential question today, concerning the reason why even though we understand how serious the ecological and social crises are, we fail at kickstarting the necessary changes. The answer to thos question can be cound in a complex part of our brain, where emotions, instincts and imagination give direction to our choices; much more than logic.
๐ขNeurosciences show us how the brain reacts to immediate risks, but reacts with less urgency to distant dangers. Our mind is often seeking security in the now, preferring reassuring visions, and therefore, tends to avoid all that can generate discomfort. When the challenges become bigger then the nervous systems enters in a stasis mode and waits, following ancestral evolutionary schemes typical of our species.
๐ขPsychology goes even deeper, Freud described Eros and Thanatos as two internal dynamics that characterise human life. On the one hand Eros feeds creativity, relationships, future desires; on the other hand Thanatos brings calmess, repetition and seeking relief from tensions. This dynaic stongly influences our capacity to iagine the necessary changes and transformation, and making them sustainable over time.
๐ขAn ecological education welcomes these compexities and can propose pathways that communicate to the body, to imagination and to the emotions, besides the rational mind. As a matter of fact, experiences in nature, the bodily practices and symbolic narratives strengthen the Eros, fostering us to rediscover vitality, belonging and faith, transforming fear into creative energy.
๐ขThis way we can bring to live a learning that supports the Life Instinct, Eros, and opens up the space for authentic actions, capable of renewing both us and the world we live in. This is an encouter between awareness and desire, between imagination and presence, and can support the dawn of real change. ๐

๐ณHumans developed a strong neurological addiction to immediate gratification. In a present day marked by uncertainties and perceived dangers, the body activates stress responses, connected to adrenaline and cortisol, and to find balances seeks quick pleasures through dopamine and endorphines. This explains why when facing fear we see within us an immediate need of comfort, distraction and compensation.
๐ขAt the same time, many educational approaches aim at extreme protective measures of children and youth, reducing the exposure to risk, quite rightly so I would add. This is a choice that is born out of the desire for security, and has deep impacts on how the nervous system learns to manage uncertainty. When danger is completely avoided, then we miss the possibility of getting acquanted to risk, on the other hand taking risks, going through that, helps develop personal strategies to face dangers and overcome them in life.
๐ขA possible ecological pedagogy proposes a different approach, one that is capable of accompanying people through proportionate yet meaningful risks. Offering guided challenges, contact with the natural world, and real responsibilities, then it becomes possible to recognise one's own internal resources, tolerate frustration, and give new meanings to failure, that becomes information and growth.
๐ขIn this pathway discomfort is part of the transformative journey, fostering self-regulation and omeostasis. Learning becomes a process that strengthens patiens, resilience and faith in oneself, essential qualities to live in in a complex and ever-transforming world.
๐ขTo educate ourselves in conscious risk-taking means to prepare people capable of acting with responsibility and to build more balanced relationships with the Self and Earth. ๐

โThe 21st Century is showing us the collapse of the great idelogies that marked our identities and made sense of our struggles. For many generations they offered us a sense of belonging and meaning. Once gone, many of us started feeling a voicd, leaving us disoriented, losing sense and meaning. Of course, because searching for belonging is part of our huan nature, and when the old milestones disappear, it is inevitable that new ones emerge.
๐ขPrecisely in the void we can find a place where many conspiracy theories found their home, such as environmental negationism. Their success is rooted in offering simple explanations, simple narratives that offer a strong sense of identity, necessary in today's complex world. In parallel, the digital age and its social media transformed sense of belonging, paraxodically, increasingly individualistic, built on personal narratives, algorythmic confirmations and fragmented communities, often based less and less on shared responsibilities. In this scenarios conspiracies offer us a sense of belonging, they can make people feel part of a group that believes that they can see the truth beyond dominant narratives.
๐ขNow comes the paradox; the environmental crisis is the greatest collective challenge of our times, and it requires coordinated and shared actions, but this is often minimised if not rejected, but why? Maybe this is too big to face alone? or do we miss and easily-identifiable enemy? or maybe because we question the identity that started to be rooted in consumerism and limitless growth.
๐ขAn alternative to this is the rediscovery of the affiliation between humans and nature; recogniting ourselves as part of the ecosystems, this could offer us a shared identity basis that overcomes political and ideological divisions. Even if this could encouter cultural resistances, since oftentimes the relations with nature are still very much associated to romantic stereotypes.
๐ขThe solution is the development of strong empirical roots; facts, and natural sciences show us clearly that we humans are an active part of the ecosystems; anthropology and history remind us that for the majority of the existence of our species we were affiliated with the natural world. This can be easily demonstrated through the stimulation of simple and concrete experiences of contact with natural environments, the observation of seasonal cycles, as a starting point to start making affiliation more accessible and tangible.
๐ขThe challenge is to build an offer for a renewed sense of belonging and participation, that is both open and inclusive, and can grow through experience, shared responsibilities and direct involvement; transforming ecology into a shared territory where we can imagine the future; transforming our relationship with the world a collective story, well-rooted in reality and open to change. ๐

๐In today's world there is a widespread attitude of waiting, as if the great crises of our age will be solved by someone else. Especially when it comes to the climate crisis, oftentimes showed as a far too complex problem, very technical, hard to fully understand; this, which brings a lot of people to fully handover responsibilities to scientists and politicians, since the problem appears to be quite distant from our daily life, and individual action seem pointless.
๐ขThen fear becomes our main drive, and this is the root of passiveness, as it brings to seek protection and safety, and blocks participation. But then we don't see the solutions coming, frustration and impotence grow hand in hand, and gradually become anger and resentment towards the institutions and perceived elites. We can actually observe how negationism becomes a destructive yet functional strategy, helping many to recover a sense of control, even if it is a mere illusion.
๐ขIf we want to find the roots of these mechanisms we can find them in many educational models that use fear as a pedagogical group; fear of bad marks, fear of judgement, fear of failure, fear of the future; a fear that pushes students to conformity and repetition, at the price of curiosity and natural desire of knowledge. If we apply this type of pedagogy to today's climate crisis, we can understand the present of catastrophic narratives and how they paralyse us instead of activating.
๐ขWhen fear becomes the dominant sensation, then it generates forms of violence, especially against ourselves, shaped like self-criticism, discouragement, as well as towards others in the forms of conflict and polarisation, and towards nature, attempting to control and dominate. This is a vicious circle that negatively influences all the relations, increasing individual and collective suffering.
๐ขEducational change is possible, if we mobilise other emotional forces, such as curiosity, desire, marvel, as stimuli to open up new, constructive learning spaces, that support individual and group responsibility, and that helps us understand that even small concrete actions have value, and participation does generate change.
๐ขThe true challenge today is to community how serious the situation is without generating paralysing instincts, cultivating an active hope rooted on tangible possibilities, shared responsibilities and gradual pathways. Then we will be able to move on from waiting to be saved, to accepting responsibilities and to contiribute. Transforming crisis into a fertile territory of learning and transformation. โ
