Here we go.... another idiom of the day: Caretuco. An example: Juan es un caretuco. Ayer estábamos en una fiesta y se comportó súper mal simplemente porqué tenía mal humor :( In English: Juan is a caretuco. Today we have another phrase from Ecuador: hacer vaca. Literally, it means "to make a cow." It's said when you want to collect money for a certain thing, like paying the bill together. For example: Hagamos vaca para comprar unas bielas - let's pool money to buy beer. Or: Nos iremos de paseo y haremos una vaca para la comida. We're going to take a trip and pool money for food.

Academia Quitolonia More than just a language school

If you go to Mindo, you should not only pay attention to the numerous butterflies. I was especially fascinated by the hummingbirds during our trip to the cloud forest - incredible creatures, they are really tiny and their heart beats more than 600 times per minute due to their energy consumption. There are more than 100 species in the Andean country between the snow-capped mountains and the tropical coastal region.

When we were in Cuenca, a little beautiful city in the southern part of Ecuador, we visited this old hat maker who makes the Panama hats in the mountains high above Cuenca. His small garage was crammed with hats and rusty tools. There was no space left on the wall. And he said with a sad face that everyone would always think that the Panama hat came from Panama. That he, among others, is behind this craft, many do not know.

Quilotoa is just amazing! It is a beautiful crater lake in the middle of nowhere. We did Quilotoa as part of a day tour in a minibus from Quito. The lake is located at an altitude of almost 4,000 meters - and that was quite noticeable. We just ran out of breath - not only because of lack of oxygen, but also because the view was just so beautiful.

Time to learn another idiom! Estar hecho pedazos means that somebody feels uncomfortable due to a certain feeling. Example: Mi amiga está hecha pedazos porque le dejó su novio - my friend doesn't feel good because she broke up with her boyfriend. Attention: Depending on the subject the word "hecho" varies.
