PERN Cyberseminar on Culture, Beliefs and the Environment - 15-19 May 2017
This cyberseminar will take place from Monday-Friday, 15-19 May 2017 using the PERNSEMINAR discussion list. A short description is provided below. For a list of panelists, and to sign up to join the discussion, go to https://www.populationenvironmentresearch.org/cyberseminars.
A background paper to this cyberseminar will be posted by 12 May.
In addition, this cyberseminar will feature a webinar that summarizes the background paper, and introduces the themes being addressed by the other expert panelists. The Webinar presenters are Dr. Vegard Skirbekk of the Columbia Aging Center and the PERN coordinators, Drs. Susana Adamo and Alex de Sherbinin. The webinar will be held on Monday, 15 May 2017, from 14:00-15:00 UTC (9:00 - 10:30 AM Eastern Time in US & Canada). You do not need to register in advance, but simply join the webinar at https://futureearth.adobeconnect.com/r2walvu0s5j/ (500 person capacity).
Summary: This Population-Environment Research Network (PERN) cyberseminar focuses on culture, belief systems, values, and the environment. The world is facing dramatic demographic shifts, and these are associated with different cultural values and belief systems that have implications for the environment. Industrialized countries face rapid aging while developing countries have large children and youth populations. These different patterns, and the cultural values and beliefs associated with them, have implications for population dynamics and how societies relate to the environment and how they are impacted by environmental changes and hazards. This relatively little studied area of the population-environment nexus is ripe for new discoveries.
Culture, belief systems and values are central to environmental decision making and behavior and to how people perceive and respond to risks and crises. Census, survey, focus group and other demographic data collection methods are central to understanding belief systems as they relate to the demographic makeup of society, including racial and ethnic groups, age and s*x distribution, education attainment, and geographic factors. The cyberseminar will address a number of topics, including: (1) cultural attitudes and values as they relate to perceptions of the environment (and risk perception); (2) culture, belief systems, values and environmentally significant consumption patterns; (3) religious beliefs and their implications for age structure and population growth; (4) how religious and other beliefs vary by population composition; and (5) vulnerability and perceptions of risk as they relate to different demographic groups.
This PERN cyberseminar is co-organized with the Columbia Aging Center. We would like to thank Future Earth for their cooperation in providing the webinar capability.

Cyberseminars | Population Environment Research Network The purpose of cyberseminars is to provide a forum for scientists from the social and natural sciences to debate and discuss cutting edge population-environment research topics.

1. Call for papers: Special Issue of International Journal of Population Studies
Theme: Family Trends and Dynamics and Their Impacts in the 21st Century
Submission deadline: 31 October 2017
Submission website: http://ojs.whioce.com/index.php/ijps
Guest editor: Rongjun Sun, Ph.D. (Cleveland State University, Cleveland, OH, USA)
As the world enters the 21st century, with socioeconomic transformation and the formation of new cultural norms, families and generational relations are undergoing profound changes and taking on new forms and shapes. For example, with the rising longevity, four or more generations living at the same time, though not necessarily living in the same household, has increasingly become commonplace. It is worth exploring the impacts of such a new demographic reality on personal relations and individual member’s well-being. Furthermore, the global divide in population prospects between the developed and developing countries points to different challenges faced by societies. While population aging and below replacement fertility have to be dealt with in rich countries, with urbanization gaining momentum, massive rural-urban migration has been witnessed in many developing countries. These socio-demographic changes may put various strains on families and it is important to understand how families are capable or incapable of responding to these challenges. Each society has its unique experience and dynamics. We herein would like to invite researchers from the international community of family studies to contribute to this special issue, to shed light on new trends in family or intergenerational relations, and their social, economic, and cultural impacts.
IJPS is an open access, multidisciplinary journal that aims to publish high quality original research and reviews of recent advances and emerging issues in population processes, including dynamics of fertility, mortality, and migration, and linkages with socioeconomic and environmental change across time, space, and cultures.
The journal is committed to rapid and high-quality refereeing for all research that is submitted to the journal. We would like to encourage researchers from different countries to consider IJPS as a venue to present your research, and encourage researchers to keep the open access spirit by sharing with IJPS readers all necessary information to replicate and reproduce their research.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published, nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. All papers are refereed through a double-blind, rigorous peer review process. All manuscripts must be written in English. Before you start to prepare your paper, please read the Author Guidelines. All papers must be submitted online. To submit a paper, please go to the Online Submission System. Publication fees can be waived. No publication fee is needed if the primary author is from the low income countries.
The submission is already open and will be closed on October 31, 2017.

2. Call for papers: Special Issue of International Journal of Population Studies
Theme: Population Aging and Challenges in Asia
Submission deadline: 30 September 2017
Submission website: http://ojs.whioce.com/index.php/ijps
With support from colleagues around the world, we launched the a couple of issue of International Journal of Population Studies (IJPS) so far. We would like launch a special issue related to population aging and challenges in Asia.
Asia is the most populous continent in the world with great diversities in population growth and socioeconomic development. Many Asian countries have been witnessing or will witness a faster pace of population aging than most today's developed countries; and most of them will likely grow old before they grow rich. However, the poor health care system, inadequate pension coverage, relatively low life expectancy, unhealthy practice (e.g., high to***co use), and poor living environments will impose tremendous challenges for Asian countries.
This special issue will focus on, but not limited to, the following topics:
Growth of population aging
Mortality at old ages
Changes of family support system
Successful aging
Aging-friendly city
Social mobility and health/mortality
Urbanization, climate change, and health
Economics of aging
Population aging and healthcare challenges
We especially welcome multi-culture or cross-nation comparative studies.

U.S. President Donald Trump intends to build a wall to stop undocumented, i.e., “illegal” immigration from Mexico and other Central American countries to the U.S. This operation will be costly and protracted. But will it be effective? Dudley L. Poston, Jr. and Peter A. Morrison contend that it will not stop or reduce undocumented immigration to the U.S. It may very well lead to the opposite result, causing would-be circular migrants to settle and stay in the U.S.

Importante:

A recent National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report examined the economic and fiscal impacts of immigration in the US. The report revealed a range of important benefits — including on economic growth, innovation, and entrepreneurship — with little to no negative effects on the overall wages or employment of native-born workers in the long term. Where studies did detect negative wage impacts, native-born high school dropouts and prior immigrants were most likely to have been affected. The fiscal picture is more mixed, with negative effects frequently evident at the state level when the costs of educating the children of immigrants are included. However, Francine D. Blau and Christopher Mackie observe, these children, on average, go on to be the most positive fiscal contributors in the population.

Call for contributions:

Social Media and Demographic Research: Applications and Implications Montreal, Canada, 15 May 2017
Deadline for submissions: 16 March 2017
This Research Workshop, sponsored by the IUSSP Scientific Panel on Big Data and Population Processes, is a side event at the 11th International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media ICWSM-17, taking place in Montreal, Canada, 16-18 May 2017.

Organizers: Emilio Zagheni, Ingmar Weber, Tom Le Grand

Direct access to the workshop website:

The IUSSP Panel on Big Data and Population Processes invites contributions from colleagues interested in Computational Demography. The Panel encourages submissions from researchers who wish to present their work, as well as the attendance of scholars interested in broadening their exposure to the topic.

Demography has been a data-driven discipline since its birth. Data collection and the development of formal methods have sustained most of the major advances in our understanding of population processes. The global spread of Social Media has generated new opportunities for demographic research, as individuals leave an increasing quantity of traces online that can be aggregated and mined for population research. At the same time, the use of Social Media and Internet are affecting people's daily activities as well as life planning, with implications for demographic behavior.

There are clear benefits inherent in connecting demography and data science. As ever more complex population-level data become available, demography can offer rigorously-developed concepts, measures and methods to those involved in the 'big social data' revolution. As social media services become a major source of social scientific data, the interaction with data science holds great potential to advance demographic research as well. Despite the great potential involved in these interactions, there is unfortunately very limited communication between population researchers and data scientists. This workshop is intended to favor communication and exchange between the two communities and would revolve around the main theme of applications and implications of social media for demographic research.

Topics that are relevant for the workshop include, but are not limited to:
* Population research with social media data
* Demographic features of online communities or services
* Sentiment analysis associated to demographic events like immigration
* Implications of social media and Internet for demographic behavior
* Nowcasting fertility, mortality or migration with online data
* Understanding population health with social media data
* Methods for extracting information from non-representative samples
* Applications of demographic methods to online populations

Submissions:
Participants who would like to present must submit an extended abstract (2-4 pages) or a full paper via EasyChair by March 16, 2017 (see https://sites.google.com/site/smdrworkshop/important-dates). The submissions will be evaluated by the Organizing Committee on the basis of quality and fit to the workshop theme. Accepted abstracts and papers will be presented as short presentations, lightning talks or posters. Participants who are interested in attending but do not submit a research paper or a position paper should submit a paragraph explaining why they are interested in participating, what they would gain from participation, and how they can contribute to the workshop.

There will be no formal Proceedings for the abstracts and papers submitted. However, authors of high quality submissions will be invited to submit their papers to a special issue on Social Media and Demographic Research of the open access journal Demographic Research (), one of the top journals in the field. The issue would include a selection of peer-reviewed papers presented at workshops organized in collaboration with the IUSSP Panel on Big Data and Population Processes.
