La expresión "Fila india" se usa para describir la posición de personas que están una detrás de otra. Tiene tres posibles orígenes:

1. Costumbre de los indios de Norteamérica, que caminaban en fila de a uno para dejar una sola huella. Así, sus enemigos, los soldados americanos, no podían saber cuántos eran en realidad. Más tarde el ejército americano adoptó esta estrategia durante la guerra de Independencia (1775-1783). Esta expresión se ha hecho universal.

2. Traslado de las tribus americanas por lugares poco transitados o sin senderos. En ese tiempo lo hacían en fila para abrirse paso.

3. Grupos étnicos que caminaban en fila distribuidos según la importancia, primero la persona más importante, generalmente el jefe de familia o líder, y detrás el resto en orden según su estatus en el seno del grupo.
