Independence and Freedom start on a bicycle 🚴

For children and teenagers, cycling opens up the world beyond the front door. Being able to cycle to school, meet friends, visit the park or explore the neighbourhood gives young people a greater sense of independence and the freedom to move around on their own.

Compared to most European countries, children in The Netherlands enjoy higher degrees of independence and freedom, and Dutch teenagers cycle on average 6.2 km daily, more than any other age group.

Safe cycling infrastructure is not just about moving from A to B, or commuting faster, it is also about teaching independence to younger generations!

This is a post for European Mobility Week, taking place from 16–22 September, and a reminder of the potential of active mobility to create more independent, connected and inclusive cities.

Vous êtes de plus en plus nombreuses et nombreux à vous déplacer à vélo ! 🚲

Les chiffres de la rentrée le confirment : le trafic de nombreuses pistes connaît une forte hausse de fréquentation depuis le début 2026. Il dépasse de plus de 10 % celui de 2025, qui était déjà le plus élevé connu, selon une récente étude de l’Institut Paris Région.

✅ 1 Parisien sur 10 se rend au travail à vélo
✅ La fréquentation sur les boulevards Sébastopol (6,1 M) et Magenta (4 M), ainsi que la rue de Rivoli (5 M) battent les records de fréquentation
✅ Entre 2020 et 2025, la fréquentation des pistes cyclables a augmenté de 47 %
