Macho adulto de Pseudophasma phthisicum (Linnaeus, 1758)

¿Sabías que esta fue la segunda especie de insecto palo descrita de la historia?
Y no solo eso, fue una de las primeras especies animales en recibir un nombre científico válido bajo el sistema de nomenclatura binomial que usamos en la actualidad.

Y es que fue descrita por el mismo Carlos Linneo como Gryllus phthisicus en 1758, en su obra Systema Naturae. Esta es la obra cumbre sobre clasificación de Linneo, que estableció el sistema de clasificación jerárquica y la nomenclatura binomial que se convirtió en el estándar mundial y es la base de la taxonomía moderna.

Actualmente, esta especie pertenece al género Pseudophasma Kirby, 1896, y es además la especie tipo del mismo. Es decir, es la especie con la que originalmente se definió al género y que fija el nombre del mismo para siempre; la descripción de esta especie es la base para establecer los caracteres diagnósticos que definen el género.

La distribución conocida para esta especie es Guyana Francesa, Surinam y noreste de Brasil.

I present to you an adult male Pseudophasma phthisicum (Linnaeus, 1758).

Did you know that this was the second species of stick insect to be described in history?
And not only that, it was one of the first animal species to be given a valid scientific name under the system of binomial nomenclature that we use today.

It was described by Carl Linnaeus himself as Gryllus phthisicus in 1758, in his work Systema Naturae. This is Linnaeus's magnum opus on classification, which established the hierarchical classification system and binomial nomenclature that became the global standard and is the basis of modern taxonomy.

Currently, this species belongs to the genus Pseudophasma Kirby, 1896, and is also the type species of the genus. That is to say, it is the species with which the genus was originally defined and which fixes its name forever; the description of this species is the basis for establishing the diagnostic characteristics that define the genus.

The known distribution for this species is French Guiana, Suriname, and the northeast of Brazil.

New Scientific Publication! 🔬 Discovering a New Stick Insect Genus from the Atlantic Forest!

We're thrilled to share this news! We've just published a new scientific article resulting from a collaboration with my friends and colleagues from Projeto Phasma and Phasmatodea.com.

We're introducing Atlantopteryx, an entirely new genus of phasmids (stick insects) described with two new species: A.scotina and A.parva.

The name is a tribute to its home and its most peculiar feature:

Atlanto: Reference to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica), their only known distribution.

Pteryx: From the Greek (πτέρυξ), meaning wing, highlighting one of their main distinctive characteristic.

What makes it so special?
Atlantopteryx is unique because it features hind wings (alae) but lacks tegmina (hardened forewings). This combination is extremely rare in phasmids in general and especially within its family, Pseudophasmatidae.

These are tiny creatures: females measure only 33–42 mm, and males 17–23 mm. Additionally, their wings, though reduced, boast very conspicuous colors.

The two species are differentiated by differences in the length and thickness of their legs relative to the body, as well as differences in wing size and coloration.

(ENG) Found this fascinating female stick insect in Pastaza, Ecuador. She measures an impressive 19 cm in body length. I've tentatively identified her as Parotocrania cf. pastazae (Hebard, 1924).

What's "cf." mean? In taxonomy, it's short for "confer" (Latin for "compare"). It indicates a probable but not absolutely certain identification. This is how we scientists communicate strong resemblance while acknowledging uncertainty!

Essentially, the specimen strongly resembles Parotocrania pastazae, but definitive confirmation requires further examination. In my lab, I'll meticulously compare it with the type specimens, which are currently housed at the ANSP museum in Philadelphia. Type specimens are the original specimens designated by an author when first describing a new species, serving as its definitive reference. I'll also cross-reference it with Hebard's original 1924 description: "Studies in Dermaptera and Orthoptera of Ecuador. Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia, 76, 109–248". This detailed work will allow me to confirm or refute its identity.

(ESP) Encontré esta fascinante hembra de insecto palo en Pastaza, Ecuador. Mide unos impresionantes 19 cm de longitud corporal. La he identificado provisionalmente como Parotocrania cf. pastazae (Hebard, 1924).

¿Qué significa "cf."? En taxonomía, es la abreviatura de "confer" (latín para "comparar"). Indica una identificación probable, pero no absolutamente segura. ¡Así es como los científicos comunicamos un gran parecido sin dejar de reconocer la incertidumbre!

Básicamente, el espécimen se parece mucho a Parotocrania pastazae, pero la confirmación definitiva requiere un estudio más detallado. En mi laboratorio, lo compararé meticulosamente con los ejemplares tipo, que actualmente se encuentran en el museo ANSP de Filadelfia. Los ejemplares tipo son los especímenes originales designados por un autor al describir una nueva especie, sirviendo como su referencia definitiva. También lo contrastaré con la descripción original de Hebard de 1924: "Studies in Dermaptera and Orthoptera of Ecuador. Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia, 76, 109–248)". Este trabajo detallado me permitirá confirmar o desmentir su identidad.

A Resounding Success in the Ecuadorian Jungle! 🌿🦗
Good morning, everyone! We're thrilled to share the incredible experience we had during 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗱𝘀❜ 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲. It was held at the Sumak Kawsay In Situ scientific station, in the heart of the Ecuadorian jungle – a place where I am part of the scientific team!

It was an unforgettable adventure, filled with learning and spectacular moments. We had an amazing time exploring the jungle's nocturnal biodiversity on two exciting excursions. The most impressive part? We managed to discover 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲! A true milestone that fills us with pride.

Thank you to all participants for their enthusiasm and dedication. This is just the beginning!
