Bruno Munari Didn’t Design Things, He Designed Experiences
Bruno Munari (1907–1998) was an Italian artist, designer, inventor, and educator whose work consistently blurred the boundaries between art, design, technology, and everyday life. Associated with the Italian Futurist movement in his early career, Munari became increasingly interested in movement, visual perception, experimentation, and the creative possibilities of simple forms. His famous Useless Machines transformed abstract geometric elements into delicate kinetic constructions that moved unpredictably in space, challenging conventional ideas about sculpture and function.
Munari also revolutionised the humble book, treating it not simply as a container for words but as an object to be touched, explored, and experienced. His experimental Aerial Books and later Prebooks encouraged children to discover colour, texture, shape, and storytelling through physical interaction. His influential book Design as Art further communicated his belief that good design should be accessible, functional, and engaging rather than merely decorative. Across an extraordinarily diverse career, Munari demonstrated that creativity thrives when disciplines overlap, and that design can be both intellectually rigorous and wonderfully playful.
