Jackie Sario’s mother needed help. As an immigrant from Japan, Hisako was quite proficient in her second homeland, United States of America. She passed her citizenship exam and had a job in the county school system. She read the newspaper and watched the news without any communication issues. She had many English-speaking friends and had no problems making herself understood. Still, when she becam

With bombs bursting in air and lots of cookies and candy, Corpus Christi celebration is noisy, fattening and fun | CuencaHighLife 16/06/2017

It’s Corpus Christi time in Cuenca! The impressive display of traditional sweets all around Parque Calderon is both amazing and tempting. For us, indulging is all about participating in the local culture. At the same time, those Corpus Christi sweets are REALLY sugary! We suggest picking two or three of the sweets most intriguing to you and buying just one or two pieces. Then eat one once a day for dessert after a meal or with coffee during your afternoon siesta. Almost all of the different traditional candies are made in small, bite-sized pieces so having just a taste is easy. Participating in moderation is the key!

Here's a link to a great article about the Corpus Christi holiday.

Many new expats lose weight when they first arrive. There are several different theories which explain this lovely phenomenon. One obvious fact is the inexpensive produce readily available everyday. Just look at this photo of a fruit stand. There are probably over 50 of these just in this one particular market called Feria Libre. One of my favorite South American fruit is Chirimoya, sometimes called Custard Apple. It's soft and white inside with huge black seeds, easily spat out. The flesh is very sweet. A fist sized Chirimoya can cost maybe $2 each and will fill you up very quickly.

Price of dental care is so reasonable here in Cuenca that it inspired a new industry, dental tourism. Many of us foreigners lose some weight after we move here to Cuenca. One of the reasons is we are cooking and eating more fruits and vegetables. The produce here are readily available and relatively inexpensive. Can you spot the avocados in the photo? A local expat has written a wonderfully informative article about adding avocado to our diet. Follow the link below for some new and interesting information about this inexpensive (in Cuenca!) fruit.
