JAM Academy

Our Mom was about celebrating life! She was never focused on the finality of something but rather the impact you made, what you learned and the relationships you forged on your journey. Her journey has been a testament to how to live life OUT LOUD! She instilled this into each one of her children, who were her most precious gifts in this world. She demonstrated tremendous courage in the face of any challenge, doing so because her character never allowed her to see an obstacle as a limitation, but rather an opportunity. Her determination and resilience, however, were backed by her faith! Mom definitely had a direct connection to God. Her prayers were powerful, her faith unwavering and her heart one of the purest you'll ever find.

Whether she was leading the Pennsylvania Chiropractic Ladies Auxiliary, driving a cancer patient to their doctor's appointment as a volunteer, or being the loudest fan in the audience or stadium for her children and grandchildren, Mom lived and loved completely. Her greatest love of all, though, was for my dad. He was her rock, her miracle worker, her devoted love and her absolute joy for 68 years!

This is the woman who we have been blessed with as our mom. Everything she did had her humor, her red-headed fiery spirit, her unconditional love, and her complete devotion to her family and her faith. As a result, each one of us carries who she is beyond the physical limitations of this earth and feels her direct connection within our heart's very core.

Since there is absolutely no way to sum up a woman of such caliber in just a few words, the only thing we can say is Thank You, MOM! We love you so very much and will be looking for your GodWinks and continued presence in our lives as we strive to walk through life using your example to make an impact with our own paths.

Since we are hunkered down and hoping that Shrek quickly takes Fiona far, far away from the D.R., I thought I'd promote a young entrepreneur who is forging a path and working for her dreams. I absolutely LOVE to see young people reimagine their career paths and take a leap towards . It takes guts, determination, grit and lots of grace to do live your passion out loud and defy the societal conditioning. In addition, she is amazingly talented and creating spectacular pieces that speak to my inner party-planner!

This group made magic last night! After 2 years, they returned to the stage with pent up musical theater ammunition! They brought it in all the ways that made people laugh, cry, feel connected and allowed them to remember what they love about the theater again! To my JAM Kids, JAM Teens and JAM Grads (who I will forever call JAM Teens because you are to me), don’t forget how hard work leads you to this outcome! Don’t ever take what you’ve been given for granted because it is a gift that needs nurtured to grow and flourish beyond your imaginations!

El concierto está repleto de una variedad de piezas de solistas y conjuntos, tanto de los actuales estudiantes de JAM como del regreso de algunos de nuestros JAM Grads, que compartirán con ustedes algunos de sus favoritos.

Las boletas se pondrán a la venta una hora antes del concierto en la entrada del Auditorio Saint Joseph School. El precio de las entradas es de $500 RD por asiento (sólo en efectivo). Calling all creatives! Do you agree that your environment impacts your creativity?

If you’re like me, you need a space that’s conducive to creativity. As a performing arts teacher/director/producer, I’ve tested out quite a few places, but here are a few of my favorite spaces to get my creative juices flowing:

🚿 I don’t know what it is about my morning shower, but I get so many ideas that I have to keep a notebook in the bathroom so that I can quickly jot them down (usually dripping all over the pages 🤷🏼‍♀️, but a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do!)

🌴🌞🐚 At the beach, listening to the waves, the birds and the breeze with the sun on my face. Inspiration directly from God!

🌳💐🧘‍♀️ Walking or meditating in the park or Botanical Gardens! Clearing my mind and centering my focus is what helps me gain clarity by removing the noise cluttering my thoughts. Works every time!

Ser artista significa que te tomas el tiempo de respetar tu cuerpo como instrumento. Significa no entrar apresuradamente en un espacio de ensayo y empezar inmediatamente a repasar la coreografía de la danza, o interpretar un personaje de una escena, o lanzarse directamente a cantar una canción.

El tipo de artista que más crece es el que conoce la importancia de calentar adecuadamente el cuerpo, preparar la mente y conectar con el espacio y la gente que le rodea. Los actores necesitan calentar el cuerpo tanto como los bailarines. Los bailarines necesitan conectar con sus emociones tanto como los actores. Los cantantes necesitan ser tan intencionados en sus movimientos como los bailarines.

Las artes escénicas son como bellas sinfonías en las que el conjunto de los oficios permite una experiencia más rica y una conexión más profunda.

The first time I walked into a classroom 28 years ago, my soul lit up. When I encountered the amazing talent all around me, but who lacked the proper training, I knew my purpose. Anyone who has come into my classroom, it is my mission to teach them how to elevate their gifts in order to reach new heights.

When I see a good singer who doesn’t know how to read music, it becomes my mission to give him/her the proper tools. What people don’t realize is how easy it actually is! In just a couple of weeks, I can take someone who never has read music before and have them competently sight singing.

Don’t settle for just ear-training and regurgitation to give you a competitive edge with your music, when it’s skill that will actually let you stand apart!

Who I AM vs Who I AM NOT:
It’s important to understand the difference!

Who I Am: A teacher who will challenge you to reach your potential. In order to do this, I am also an eternal student so that I can always offer the beat of me. I am a woman who has lived plenty of life experiences. I am vulnerable with my students so that they know they can trust me with their own vulnerabilities. I am human and will use my failures to gain knowledge and wisdom. I am a leader and will always do my best to lead by example. I am someone who’s purpose is to make a positive impact…one student at a time. I use my platform to provide powerful messages to both my students and our audiences. I will guide the next generation of artists to raise the bar and express themselves freely.

Who I AM NOT: I am not impressed by mediocrity. I will not betray my integrity. I do not feed into fads. I am not about quantity, but rather quality! I will never give up on myself or my students.

Living life out loud will always outweigh the pain that may result in taking the risk to make your life meaningful! So many great messages in this throwback!!!

It seems surreal that I’m writing this from NYC, but yes, this year’s anniversary comes when I’m on vacation back in the US.

Twenty nine years ago today, I moved to the Dominican Republic. As a girl from a small town in NW Pennsylvania, I made a 180 degree shift and did something that I never thought I had the courage to do…move to another country, leaving all those who I loved, all that was familiar, in order to follow my heart. This day leaves me feeling a myriad of things: melancholy, loss, excitement, love, but most of all it leaves me with the blessing of being accepted and embraced by people and a culture that may have not been my birthplace, but has been the only thing I’ve known as an adult.

Thank you to all those who have taught me the intricacies of the Dominican humor, had the patience (and still do) to tolerate my not-so-perfect Spanish, introduced me to the beauty of the music and dance, gave me laughter and levity along each rhythmic step that my life has led me.

Thank you for trusting this Gringa to guide your children in the arts and know that my heart is big enough to fit them all! Without a name, you could see the truth of my passion and invested in my dream to make a difference.

These 29 years have taught me to live in the moment, because nothing else is guaranteed. I am grateful for your love and teachings as we’ve walked side by side on this journey!
