To God be the glory
THE MYSTERY OF THE BURNING BUSH THAT WAS NOT CONSUMED
One of the greatest mysteries in the Book of Exodus is found in Exodus 3:1–6. Moses saw a bush burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed.
This was not an ordinary fire.
The Bible says that Moses saw the bush burning, but instead of being destroyed by the flames, it remained alive. That sight caused Moses to turn aside and ask why the bush was not consumed.
But there was a deeper message behind what Moses saw.
THE BUSH REPRESENTED A PLACE OF DIVINE ENCOUNTER.
Moses was living an ordinary life in Midian. He was tending sheep when suddenly heaven interrupted his routine. The God who had a purpose for him revealed Himself through the burning bush.
This teaches us that God can meet a person in the middle of an ordinary day and completely change the direction of their life.
Moses thought he was only taking care of sheep, but heaven knew he was being prepared to lead a nation.
Sometimes, you may think your life is ordinary, forgotten, or delayed, but God may be preparing you for an assignment greater than what you can presently see.
THE FIRE REVEALED GOD’S PRESENCE.
Throughout Scripture, fire is often connected with the manifestation of God’s holiness, power, and presence. But the mystery here is that the fire burned without destroying the bush.
Normally, fire consumes whatever it touches.
But this fire was different.
It was the fire of divine presence.
The same presence that can destroy what is evil can preserve what God has chosen.
THIS IS THE GREAT MYSTERY:
WHEN GOD’S PRESENCE COMES UPON A LIFE, THE FIRE THAT SHOULD HAVE DESTROYED YOU CAN BECOME THE FIRE THAT PRESERVES YOU.
The bush was in the fire, yet the fire did not consume it.
That is the picture of divine preservation.
Many people have gone through fire and wondered, “How am I still standing?”
You have faced troubles that should have destroyed you.
You have gone through rejection that should have broken you.
You have entered battles that should have finished you.
Yet you are still here.
Like the burning bush, you may have been surrounded by fire, but you were not consumed.
WHY?
Because there are some lives that the hand of God preserves.
The enemy may light the fire, but God can turn that same place of fire into a place where His glory is revealed.
THE BUSH WAS BURNING, BUT IT WAS NOT DESTROYED.
This teaches us something powerful about trials.
The presence of fire does not always mean the absence of God.
Sometimes, God is present in the very place where you expected to be destroyed.
Moses did not meet God in a palace.
He met God in a wilderness.
He did not meet God in comfort.
He met God beside a burning bush.
This means that your wilderness can become a place of encounter.
Your difficult season can become the place where you hear God more clearly.
Your struggle can become the location where heaven reveals your next assignment.
DO NOT DESPISE THE PLACE YOU ARE NOW.
Moses saw only a bush.
But God saw an opportunity for revelation.
The place where you feel forgotten may become the place where God calls your name.
Another powerful mystery is this:
GOD CALLED MOSES ONLY AFTER MOSES TURNED ASIDE TO SEE.
Exodus 3:4 says that when the Lord saw that Moses turned aside to see, God called to him.
There are moments when God places something before us to capture our attention.
The problem is that many people are too distracted to notice what God is showing them.
Moses stopped.
He turned aside.
He paid attention.
And then God spoke.
Sometimes the next instruction from heaven comes when you are willing to stop and pay attention to God.
Before Moses received the assignment, he had to turn aside from his routine.
Before God spoke about Egypt, Moses had to first notice the fire.
THIS TEACHES US:
DIVINE ENCOUNTERS OFTEN REQUIRE DIVINE ATTENTION.
You cannot always hear God clearly while your heart and mind are filled with distractions.
There are moments when you must turn aside from the noise and give God your attention.
Then God said something shocking to Moses:
“Put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.”
The ground itself had not become holy because of the soil.
The ground became holy because God was there.
This reveals a powerful truth:
THE PRESENCE OF GOD CAN TURN AN ORDINARY PLACE INTO HOLY GROUND.
You may pray in an ordinary room, but when the presence of God fills that place, it becomes a place of encounter.
You may be in a wilderness, but if God meets you there, the wilderness is no longer ordinary.
You may feel that your life has become empty like a desert, but one encounter with God can change the meaning of the entire place.
Another mystery is found in the choice of the bush itself.
God could have appeared through something mighty.
He could have appeared through a palace.
He could have chosen a great tree.
But He appeared through a bush.
A bush was ordinary.
It was small.
It was not impressive.
Yet God placed His fire upon it.
This is the message:
GOD DOES NOT NEED AN IMPRESSIVE VESSEL TO SHOW HIS GLORY.
God can take an ordinary person and place His presence upon them.
He can take the rejected and use them.
He can take the forgotten and call them.
He can take the weak and reveal His strength through them.
Moses himself was not a perfect man.
He had failed.
He had run from Egypt.
He had spent years in the wilderness.
But the God of the burning bush still called him.
Never think your past has made you useless to God.
The God who appeared in a bush can place His glory upon a life people have overlooked.
And here is another deep mystery:
THE FIRE WAS IN THE BUSH, BUT THE BUSH DID NOT BECOME THE SOURCE OF THE FIRE.
The bush carried the fire.
It did not produce the fire.
This is how every servant of God should understand ministry.
We are only vessels.
The power does not come from us.
The glory does not originate from us.
The fire belongs to God.
A bush without divine fire is only a bush.
A person without God’s presence may have talent, education, and ability, but divine assignment requires divine empowerment.
THE GREAT LESSON FOR US
The burning bush teaches us that:
You can be in the fire without being consumed.
You can be in the wilderness and still encounter God.
You can be ordinary and still carry extraordinary glory.
You can have a painful past and still receive a divine calling.
You can feel forgotten by people and still be remembered by heaven.
You can be weak in yourself and still carry the power of God.
THE GREATEST SECRET OF THE BURNING BUSH IS THIS:
THE BUSH SURVIVED BECAUSE THE FIRE CAME FROM GOD.
And when God is the One sustaining your life, what should have consumed you will not be able to finish you.
Moses turned aside to see a bush.
But what he discovered was more than a bush.
He discovered a God who still speaks.
He discovered a God who calls people by name.
He discovered a God who sees the suffering of His people.
And he discovered that one encounter with God can turn a shepherd in the wilderness into a deliverer of a nation.
THE MESSAGE IS SIMPLE:
DO NOT RUN FROM EVERY FIRE.
Some fires are meant to destroy you, but there are also moments when God uses the fire to reveal His presence, purify your life, get your attention, and prepare you for your assignment.
The bush was burning, but it was not consumed.
And that is the testimony of many lives.
“I HAVE BEEN THROUGH THE FIRE, BUT I AM STILL HERE.”
The reason you are still standing is not because the fire was small.
It is because the God who called you is greater than the fire around you.
The same God who preserved the bush is able to preserve you.
And the same God who called Moses from the fire can still call, restore, empower, and send an ordinary person to fulfil an extraordinary assignment.
