We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Max Andrew, affectionately known to generations of students as “Sir Max” or “Mr. Andrew,” who passed away on Sunday, 22 February, at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital.

Mr. Andrew had been with Lead Institute since its inception in 2010 and was instrumental in its management, growth, and development. His dedication and commitment significantly contributed to the Institute’s outstanding performances in both CAPE and Cambridge A’ Level examinations.

Over the years, he lectured in Caribbean Studies, Communication Studies, History, Economics, Geography, and Environmental Science. He was an altruistic, caring, and conscientious educator who truly loved his students. Always willing to go the extra mile, he quietly assisted some students with tuition and gave selflessly of his time and energy. Teaching was not just his profession—it was his passion.

Mr. Andrew was wholly devoted to the development of education in Dominica and to the advancement of Dominican youth. He spent his entire working life either in the classroom or in the administration of education. His distinguished career included service at the Wesley High School, Principal of the St. Andrews High School, Principal of Nehemiah Comprehensive High School, Education Development Officer with the Curriculum Development Unit, and as a lecturer at the Dominica Teacher’s College, the Dominica State College (Sixth Form College), UWI Open Campus, Business Training Center, and Lead Institute.

Mr. Andrew was well loved by the entire Lead Institute community and will be dearly missed. His legacy of excellence, integrity, and service will continue to inspire us all.

Lead Institute extends its deepest sympathies to the family, friends, colleagues, and former students of the late Mr. Max Andrew.

May he rest in peace.

Part 2 – Should You Apply to U.S. Universities Amid Visa Uncertainty?”

A question we’re hearing daily is whether Dominican students should still apply to U.S. universities for Fall 2026.

The honest answer is; it depends—but doing nothing is rarely the best option.

If you are already studying in the U.S., your status remains intact. You should stay focused, follow visa rules carefully, and avoid unnecessary travel.

For prospective students, the current environment introduces uncertainty around new visa issuance. That means outcomes are less predictable than in the past—but it does not mean opportunity has disappeared.

Our advice is a balanced one: continue strong U.S. university applications while also exploring alternative pathways. Admissions and scholarships take time, and policies can change before visa interviews occur.

If you prepare well and keep your options open, you have the best opportunity to succeed—regardless of how the policy environment evolves.

Education is a long-term investment. This moment calls for strategy, flexibility, and calm—not fear.

Part 1 – U.S. Visa Restrictions: What Dominican Students Need to Know”

Over the past few weeks, many Dominican students and parents have been understandably anxious about reports of new U.S. travel and visa restrictions. For families planning higher education, uncertainty can feel overwhelming.

What’s important to understand is that these restrictions are not about Dominican students doing something wrong. They are policy decisions related to how visas are issued, not about academic performance, behaviour, or immigration violations.

If you are already studying in the United States, you are not being asked to leave, and existing valid visas have not been cancelled. The main concern is for new applicants who were planning to apply for a U.S. visa for the first time.

Dominica’s inclusion is linked to broader U.S. policy concerns around vetting systems and citizenship-by-investment programmes, not the long-standing success of Dominican students abroad. In fact, Dominican students have a strong track record of studying legally and successfully in the U.S.

The Government of Dominica has confirmed it is engaging directly with U.S. authorities through diplomatic channels, and history shows that measures like these are often reviewed or adjusted over time.

The key message for families is this: stay informed, avoid panic, and seek reliable guidance. This situation is evolving, and education planning should be thoughtful—not rushed.
